Renfaire 09
Noters Beware!! This is a “mean-note” free diary.
So, after much ado, I got to go to the Renaissance Festival this year. It almost didn’t happen. I was supposed to go with my sister and then at the last minute, she informed me that she decided she couldn’t afford to go. I had very little time to pull it all together, but I managed to get a small group of friends together and off we went.
The weather was terrible. It is Michigan, after all. It would be sunny one minute, and pouring rain the next. It was cold. And I got soaked to the skin. Doesn’t help that I have been fighting a chest cold anyway. Now I’ll probably have pneumonia. But it was all worth it.
I didn’t get to take very many pics. I planned to take a million. But I refused to let the camera get soaked. So I only have a precious few. But here they are.
The first few are from the joust. Each side of the joust gets their own jouster to root for. Ours was the blond guy in green. He had a wonderful personality and definately got his section of the crowd riled up. Even in the cold pouring rain.
The next ones are me with various friends. Most of you who read my diary know I travelled with the Renaissance Festival for 10 years (and worked Michigan’s for quite a few years before that). I miss my friends dearly now that I am off the road. I keep thinking about going back. Maybe someday I will, but for now, these pics mean the world to me.
The first one is me with my friend April. She is a hair-braider at the faire. She also owns a few other booths, like one that sells flower garlands. She is one of those “world is my oyster” kind of people. There is little that April cannot do. She is a wonderful person and I am very honored to be her friend.
The next one is me with April’s braiding partner, Kimbelle. Kimbelle has one of those wonderful sarcastic senses of humor. She, too, is a wonderful person.
The next one is me with Amoreena. Amoreena is the daughter of one of my favorite people on the planet, Mick. Mick also has a garland booth at the Michigan Renaissance Festival. She is from Texas, and I could listen to her talk all day and not get bored. Amoreena is sunshine, plain and simple. Always smilin’, always happy. Sometimes I wish I was closer to her, so her outlook on life could rub off.
These last couple of pics are of the braid that April put in my hair. Unfortunately, I had to take it out last night because it just got too itchy. I am not used to having my hair up for long periods of time. It was incredibly beautiful. I wish I had her talent.
I haven’t been to a Ren Faire in years. California’s Ren Faires have little to do with the Renaissance or fairs; they’re just commercial ventures that hawk anything they can haul to a fair. Many of the vendors don’t even try to pretend they are involved in a Renaissance festival; they set up the same way they would at a swap meet. The state sport of Maryland is jousting. I’m not certain howthey decided upon that, but they did. It probably has something to do with Maryland’s long heritage of horse racing.

Oh your hair looks wonderful! It’s such a shame you had to take it out, but I understand the itchy thing. I can’t keep my hair up for long either. Thanks for sharing the pictures; they’re beautiful. The blues in the first picture are gorgeous. I’m glad you had a great time at the festival.
