un-needed*

*Edit*: Some of you have been asking what the phone-a-thon is. Basically what the job entails is sitting in a phone bank, calling up alumni, loyal sports fans, and anyone who may’ve gone to Johns Hopkins hospital for anything, and asking them to donate to the schools. The guy tried to make it sound much more glamorous than that, but really all it is is asking for handouts (for the school). It does pay very very well though… *sigh*

Yesterday was supposed to be my first day working at the bookstore. Well first I get up to Gilman hall and all the doors save one were locked. So needless to say, by the time I found an unlocked door, I was already late by about 5 minutes.

I walk into the bookstore, and go to a woman that I recognized as someone who was in charge, and let her know that I was one of the temps, and I was supposed to be working that day. She said that they’d gotten finished packing up the old store a lot faster than they’d thought they would, so they didn’t need me (or anyone else) for the rest of the day. “Are you scheduled to work tomorrow?” she asked. “We won’t be needing you tomorrow either. Starting Monday you can report to the new store.” Lovely. So I got to go home, and proceeded to spend the rest of the day doing laundry and watching the movies that I’d rented the night before, but hadn’t gotten to watch.

At 8pm, I was supposed to go to Xando’s for my shift there.. It’s right downstairs, so I walked out the door at about 7:53. As I was walking the 100 or so feet from my front door to Xando’s door, my phone rang. I looked at the caller ID. It said “Xando’s”. I answer it, and it’s my boss Amy. I tell her I’m right at the front door and she goes, “Oh, well we’re really dead, so I was going to tell you to not even bother coming in.” Lovely. I was already inside the door at that point, and so I made myself a Vanilla Chai, and left, to spend the rest of the evening chatting online with some of the other board mods, and watching Grey’s Anatomy on abc.com

Oh, some days I love my life

I told carlini that I was going to cave in and email the guy back about the phone-a-thon. I mean, with a job like that, there’s little-to-no chance I’d ever be told don’t bother coming in today. Not to mention the hours are more manageable; still evenings, but not as late at night as xando’s; never work on a saturday, and make your own schedule. And $9/hour. I’m still just on the fence because of the whole… calling people thing. Ugh. But I NEED to get a job that’s approved for federal work study, and right now the phone-a-thon is my only option for that. The bookstore would be approved, except I’m still not certain if they’ll need me after the temp position expires. As it is, what was supposed to be a 20 hour work week this week has already been cut down to 12. Plus on monday and tuesday, those four hour shifts will actually only be 3 hours since i’ll have to leave to go to class, and then come back. Blargh. whatever.

Anywho, that’s all for now. Later I’m planning on writing an entry on what I believe in (spiritually), which has been a long time coming ever since I said I don’t believe in Jesus anymore almost three years ago (wow, I didn’t realize it was that long)… so stay tuned for that.

Oh and p.s.: what do you think of the new layout?
