thoughts for the day

You know who never takes medicine? Wild animals. If they get sick, they just die, and their genetic line is eliminated (provided they haven’t yet reproduced). And as a result, only the animals who are resistant to illness propogate the species.

Humans take lots of medicines. And in many ways we’re sicker than we’ve ever been. Cancer, AIDS, Alzheimers, Parkinsons, Autism… how many of these diseases have seen surges in the number of sufferers within the last half century? or even quarter-century?

Maybe we could get rid of AIDS by getting rid of all the people that *have* AIDS

Just a thought.

I was watching a program on the Discovery channel about how they make antivenom for venomous snakebites. After milking venom from the fangs of venomous snakes, they inject tiny amounts of venom at a time into horses. Not enough to affect the horse, but enough so that the horses body starts an immune response to it, and builds up antibodies. They then extract the horse’s blood with antibodies, and purify the antibodies, and stablize them to a usable form.

Extreme vegetarians, or vegans, do not consume or use or wear any products made from animals at all.

So what would happen if a militant vegan got bitten by a snake?

Just a thought.

“how many of these diseases have seen surges in the number of sufferers within the last half century?” A considerably lengthened life expectancy has a lot to do with that. I would also suggest that the reason some of these diseases have more sufferers is simply because medicines are able to keep them alive longer rather than just dying quickly.

Killing everyone with AIDS (or any other viral disease for that matter) would likely eradicate the disease but that’s an awfully draconian solution.
