Civil Union
These days, a civil union ceremony for same sex couples is legal in New Jersey. We have been putting it off, since we had a big wedding bash in 2004. HOWEVER, we just had our wills and power of attorney done by a real attorney (we had a computer version before) and he urged us to do this, so that we are legally protected. The biggest reason is the house and that is two-fold. First for tax reasons (which would be huge) and although we are both on the deed, the second reason is that a family member could swoop in and claim half of the house.
Anyway, we filled out the forms and yesterday the township clerk tells me that I need to produce my divorce papers. I do not have them, I don’t remember the lawyer (I was still actively drinking at the time) and I am not even sure of the year. I asked about a death certificate, since he is deceased and they said no deal. I had already called his sister asking for it. It was nice to talk with her, but I was quite frenzied for the rest of the day.
To make a long story short. The clerk called me this afternoon and said that in these situations where the papers are unavailable, they will take my signature and my word that I am divorced. She did a lot of research and I am grateful. We went to the clerk’s office with a friend and paid our $28.00. It will take three days for the certificate and then we have a month to have the service performed. I contacted a Unity minister who will do the service, on the Thursday after next WHEW!
I had also called several judges and looked on the Internet to find someone who would actually perform the service.

wow…I find it amazing that you can find someone to love. This is the first entry that I have read. I hope someday I can find someone to spend the rest of my life with. Congratulations! I’m glad you got the paperwork unraveled. It made me realize that I have no clue whatsoever where the divorce papers from my first marriage are. I don’t suppose I’d ever need them, but stuff like that does vanish. And it’s a really good idea to get the legal stuff settled. It’s encouraging that civil services are legal in NJ, but I hope we’ll all see the day that marriage will betoo.

God bless that clerk for trusting your word. No one trusts anyone any more. You’re the second couple I’ve read on here today that is getting married for real estate and other reasons down the road. It’s more important than ever.

Congrats!! It warms my heart to see lgbt couples doing so well. Y’know, if you remember what jurisdiction or city or whatever you were in where the divorce was filed, you could probably get a copy from them. It’s a public record, so… I was so disappointed to see ALL the anti-gay-marriage things pass. Maybe this extreme result will cause the pendulum to swing back. I don’t understand how so many folks can be happy about the state of racial politics (we have a black president) yet still find a group they’d like to deny rights too. sigh
