open mic.
today like a dream, misty, running around to accomplish -nothing really- although i did finally get Dave in Brighton on the phone and made plans to go down and build a bicycle trailer with him at the end of the week, cant wait, he s got design ideas and we ll go recycle the materials needed from scrap on the street, mission on –
last night was a good session at the open mike, i accompanied andrew’s guitar on the flute – he played 3 of his own songs, which i remember him practising by the stream in Italy, the green broadleaves fluttering in the breeze from the bluedragonfly s wings and the rivuleting water in the background soundscape, wendy recording mistress extraordinaire in her floppy straw hat and blooming jewelery, and then lets play moli s song, when i was a young girl i used to seek pleasure when i was a young girl i used to drink ale, from out of the alehouse and into the jailhouse…..
moli used to sing that song in her soft and sweet voice and play the guitar while sitting in the doorway of the camper van , the tuscan sun shining and often the reason why we were down by the stream was to escape the heat of the day – some epic meals were had on top of the wood pallet decking – 13 of us, one day ! – the two hammocks swinging with their varied contents , Ami dispensing the wisdom of her 92 years with equal honesty and gusto , Andrew climbing the hazel trees, connla s well sated with the taste of 3 times 3 –
the jam was announced and we had two singers, violin, piano, two guitars, and flute, and the first song we did was house of the rising sun – oh oh oh its all about regret in the end isnt it oh mothers tell your children not to do as i have done but i know the house of the rising sun even if i havent made it to new orleans yet it s the place where you abandon the chance of ever going back, identify with that, i thought about the house of the rising sun as i was getting the red rising tattooed on my back emblazoned across the scapula, the bird with the serpents tail doesnt always fly east he prefers to go south and seek out the sunnier spots before sunset
i handled not having been on stage for about 2 years i reckon reasonably well but then the venue is very low key, its not like playing opening band to bad religion at the shepherds bush empire for 1500 people, hah, that was fun, it almost makes me want to get out the old ska-punk tracks and remember how to play ollie and fuck the government and bank job, but instead i m playing the masada and trying to learn my way (sid vicious style) – on a 2 reed, hah, i m cheating the sax – but the keys stick a little still on the old faithful that is khan the conn alto sax – g to g# makes the cogs grind to a halt
however when the microphone was thrust into my space for a flute solo at the end of rising sun i laughed too hard and spoiled my embouchure, haha, no self-possession whatsoever –
i havent brought the sax to the open mike yet. that will be fun when it happens
at the end of the night andrew invited me into the music collective he s setting up with Fi (a very awesome female guitarist, stunning solos) with a view to going on tour sometime. that. would. be. freaking. brilliant. we both laughed – been my dream for years to go on tour with a band – not like arcadia travelling circus band but proper gigs in venues touring ! – its a big dream of his too – so i m excited about that, to say the least –
the girl in black socks and no shoes last night looking for barn street, oh barnes street, its the next one on the left – katerina the portuguese junkie on brick lane looking for hostel money, homelands, homelands – the guy with the altogether too perfect hair sitting up on the stool and saying this is a song by ray charles before blowing us away with a full throttle vocal chords and guitar strings twanging –
i have to open a new place which is daunting but it is the perfect time for it as i still dont have a room and andrew s crew have just been evicted, and gary and blue might help and come along –
