The L Shape

I slept in this morning for the first time in months. I didn’t get up until almost 10am. Of course, it was because I stayed up late last night clearing out my DVR, making a voice blog (previous entry), and generally feeling sorry for myself because I couldn’t manage to get the things I need to get accomplished done yesterday. I am hoping that, because today is a new day, today will be a different day.

I recently restructured my desk area. I had had my desk against the wall in my dining room, with two file cabinets on it’s left flank, forming an "L" shape. But the file cabinets together were only 3 ft. long, and they were different heights, so it wasn’t really a work station. Besides, my desk is mostly taken up with my computer, my external hard drive, and the base for my lamp. I don’t have much elbow room, much less study space.

Last semester, I bought a "Craft table"–an ordinary fold up table that was about five feet long. I used to pull it out and set it up in the middle of my living room so that I could spread my books out. I liked that arrangement, but running back and forth to my computer (or if I brought the laptop over, running back over to the printer–which I couldn’t move) got really old.

Last weekend, one of my file cabinets died. It was a wooden one Grant and I purchased up iin Wisconsin, so it survived two moves (fully packed, because why would I unpack a file cabinet), so it died an honorable death. The poor thing was ugly as sin too. We duct taped it to hold the drawers in for the first move, and when we pulled the duct tape off, most of the "wood" finish came off with it. So, last weekend, as I was trying to stuff more crap into the bottom drawer (where I keep the information packets that come with stuff (like computers and blenders and tvs), the thing nearly collapsed on my foot.

I’m not sure what it is about me, but I seem to be collapse prone these days.

In any case, I went ahead and threw all of the file cabinets contents into a box and taped it up (we’ll be moving in two months anyway, time to start packing) and took the cabinet outside. It now sits on my porch, as it’s too frucking heavy to carry down my completely collapseable stairs.

After removing the file cabinet, I got the great idea to put my craft table ON TOP of my other file cabinet (which, by the way, is metal and not so likely to collapse–although at this point, it wouldn’t shock me). Now I have a nifty "L" shaped work space, but the left flank is 5ft long by 3ft wide. Awesome!

The whole arrangement has worked very well this week–and Bagheera loves having somewhere new to jump from. But alas, last night I moved my computer back to my rocker-recliner. I sat online and watched tv and fell back into my old routine. I ate because I was bored and hormonal. And then I ate because I didn’t feel full enough. And then I ate because I was bored and hormonal. Granted, it only added up to 400 calories over my goal, because I don’t have much more than rabbit food around here anyway, but it still depresses me.

Even now, I’m sitting in my chair rather than at my computer. But my thinking is that if I’m going to take a few days off from the gym, I should take a few days off from my desk. Sitting in that chair, leaning forward looking at text and typing crap and whatnot can really take it’s toll on my back. So, I’ll relax in my rocker-recliner this weekend. And on Sunday night, I’ll move back to my desk. That’s the plan. It’s a good plan, I think.

I’m currently balancing writing this entry with chatting online with Grant. We’re trying to schedule his weekend phone call. Before the time change, it was easier. When I stayed up all night, it was easier. Now, it’s a pain in the ass. He doesn’t want to get up early. I’m not exactly chatty in my mornings (writty, yes, but not so much on the phone in the mornings). Plus, my mornings determine my days–most of the time–and Grant and I fight a lot on our weekend phone calls. I don’t know why it happnes… it just does. In any case, we’ll work it out. I’m not the one on a military base in a war zone, so I’ll compromise my morning. If we start fighting though, so help me God, I’m going for a pack of smokes…

Well, I think I’ll sign off now. I believe I’ve probably bored everyone whose bothered to read with my story of the desk remodel. Also, I’ve got a considerable amount of writing to do for a project that I was technically suppose to finish last night, so I best not spend all my writing juices before I get that done.

Have a good weekend everyone!

Ciao!
