Kitten Update
No pictures this time but the kittens made the transition from only being allowed out when supervised to being allowed out all the time. We left them out on their own last night while we slept, that was a first. Over the past few weeks we’ve been letting them show us while they’re out what’s not kitten proof. We’ve also been teaching them that they shouldn’t chew cords and things of that nature. The past week we’ve had little to no problems so we believe the house is totally kitten proof.
They’re happy not to be locked up at night, that’s for sure. Sophie appears to not be producing any more milk whatsoever. I got a good feel of her belly this morning and I think it’s time we make an appointment for her to be spayed. I am thankful that she hasn’t gone into heat again. A mother cat can go into heat while still nursing kittens. Cats are very fertile animals. We’ve been lucky, Sophie hasn’t gone into heat. I’ll probably plan on scheduling her spay for the week we’re taking off in December. Poor Sophie, being a stray and all I hate to leave her at the vets office like this, at least our vet doesn’t keep them overnight unless there’s a problem. She’ll go home the same day and we’ll have a quiet place set up for her to rest. I want to make sure she knows she’s not being abandoned…again.
The kittens are a joy. They’ve discovered how much fun it is to attack our feet under the covers. They run up and down the stairs chasing after one another. They really liven up the house and that’s one thing I love about them. I’ve missed having kittens in the house. I haven’t had a kitten since Kenny, and that was nearly 5 years ago. Now we have three and the house is full of life, hearing the little thump thump thump of them running up and down the stairs always makes me smile.
Our house will never not be full of animals. I can’t live without a warm fuzzy kitty around, or 2 or 3, or um, 8. 🙂
One thing I didn’t mention being Thankful for is animal rescuers. There is always a special place in my heart for people who open their doors and hearts to homeless animals. I do what I can and I know other people do what they can. I don’t know how anyone can look into the eyes of an animal and abandon it on the side of the road, in a park, anywhere. I am eternally grateful to every person that has done their part adopting an animal from a shelter, taking in an animal off the street. You’ve done your part to make that animals world a better place. I just wish there were more people doing this as there are still far too many animals out there. I am grateful to the person that mentioned Sophie to me, she helped save 6 lives that day. And what a reward this has been for me. Being a part of raising these 5 little lives, 5 wonderful little lives that may not have had a chance out on the streets. Now, the hard part is over and I get to sit back, watch them grow into adulthood, and enjoy them.
