Computer Rebuild and a Move

Okay, so yeah, remember that virus I bitched about yesterday? Hehe, well, it did more damage than I thought. It wasn’t particularly malicious or anything but it did enough damage to my computer that I had to rebuild. My computer was due for a rebuild anyway so I just backed up my files I wanted to keep and put on a fresh install of Win2k. Hubby was able to clean his computer well enough using Norton. The virus was actually able to stay in the computers memory to reinfect the computer. The virus scanner we’d used Wednesday night wasn’t able to clean the memory. Anyway, when I came home from work on Thursday I decided to run the scanner again because I had a feeling and sure enough the computer was reinfected. I have Norton installed now and I ran Norton on my backup cd, it’s clean, I didn’t back up any file types that the virus infects, it only targeted executibles. Anyway, I’m not a big fan of virus scanners. In the past they’ve taken up too much memory, bogged down my computer and caused things to crash. I have a 1.60 GHZ dell now and it doesn’t seem to be a problem. I even played Neverwinter, which is also a system hog with no problems so I’m going to leave Norton installed. We get it and all the updates free by stealing it off the remote cd’s from work anyway so why the hell not? hehe

Anyway, apparently this virus has been kicking around for awhile because guess why we were having problems with the neverwinter expansion pack? Yepp, the virus. Because of the copy protection and the fact that the virus has tampered with the file it wouldn’t run. There are still some legitimate claims about the expansion pack though, they are actually using shitty copy protection that causes cd’s not to run on all machine’s, especially those with CD-RW drives so Atari isn’t entirely off the hook. At least neverwinter runs flawlessly on our machine’s now.

When we went to get into our car this morning, guess what? Our A/C isn’t getting cold. It was working great yesterday and all of a sudden, not getting cold. We must get to the root of this problem, and soon because it’s HOT. It doesn’t seem like a problem with low refrigerant, it seems more like an electrical problem with the switch that actually activates the A/C compressor not working, almost like a blown fuse or something of that nature.

So, we helped the brother in law and his wife move today. Yeaaahhh. The day started off with me in a bad mood because his damn wife wouldn’t let me do anything! Any time I tried to pick up something even remotely heavy she took it away from me. I felt treated like a child and it really pissed me off. I don’t know what it’s like over in Holland but I know at least in my family I was always expected to work as hard as the guys. I was moving really heavy ass shit when I was like 12. I also moved once a year for a long time with my mom. I’ve lived in 10 different houses so far in my life. So having someone chastising me for picking something up wore thin very quickly. I was bored out of my damn mind.

We drove their Subaru WRX the hour and a half to where they live in Mass. They drove their UHaul. The first thing I thought when I sat down in the Subaru was thank god we didn’t buy one of these. Not only is it turbo (evil) but it felt cheap, the seats were uncomfortable and I felt unsafe. I feared getting into an accident in that thing more than I would our Hyundai. That said I would never buy a WRX. We are considering a Subaru Forester though instead of a Hyundai Santa Fe. I’m just having a hard time putting faith in Hyundai because our Accent is becoming nothing but problems at 33 thousand miles. *fume*

On the way to their new house we saw a sign that said “America Bless God” We both busted a gut laughing. I didn’t know God needed blessing!

So we finish up moving, me carrying heavy stuff despite being chastised repeatedly *grin* Hey, I wanted to get home. When we went to leave for dinner we discovered that the brother in laws wife had locked the keys in the UHAUL *sigh* After trying to jimmy the lock with a coat hanger we drove out to the local police station to find out if there was a locksmith in town. They live out in the boonies out there. Anyway, the police called the locksmith who was supposed to arrive at the house in 45 minutes. We waited an hour and 45 minutes and the guy never bothered to show. Brother in law was outside looking for the perfect rock to bust the glass with when I remembered that there is a weak spot on older Fords. This was an older F350 and that little triangular peice of glass on the 2 side windows is a serious weakness in all older trucks that have that. All you need is a screw-driver and you’re in. All you have to do is pry down by the latch and it’ll give. Luckily the latch gave without breaking so we were in, had the keys and after much jumping up and down and hugging were on our way to dinner. By this time it was 7pm or so. I was pretty proud of myself for remembering how to break in to a Ford. I know a lot of things from being around my dad. Ever need to know how to hot-wire a Harley or break into a car, give me a call. 🙂

Anyway, we had dinner and then drove their WRX back to their apartment here in CT, picked up our car and went home. By the time we got home it was 11pm and Sara had not been outside to use the bathroom for 13 hours and was 7 and a half hours late for dinner. We felt AWFUL!!! We were shocked but she hadn’t gone to the bathroom in her crate. 13 hours she held it!!!! What a great dog she is. We’re getting a copy of our house key made tomorrow though in case anything like this ever happens again. We’re going to give it to our neighbors, we can just give them a call and they’ll take care of her. They’ve told us this in the past but we hadn’t gotten around to having a key made.

After today I am grateful. Today taught me how wonderful me and my husband have had it. The house his brother bought is rough. It needs a lot of work and they’re starting out with nothing. They don’t have a fridge or anything. The house is all original and it’s from the 1800’s. It’s as old as ours but ours was rebuilt in 1980. It’s not finished no, but at least the restoration is completed, our projects are little comparitively, new windows, trim, things of that nature. I am thankful for all the people who have helped us along the way. Those that gave us free furniture and those that made it easy to get a neat house. We have had it really easy and I am truly thankful for the people in my life that have made it possible for me to be where I am today. I consider myself to be one of the luckiest people alive and I am truly thankful. I often take things for granted but I do have a very loving and giving family and although they’ve made their mistakes and have their issues we all do. I truly am lucky to have these people.

And with that I’ll close.

Goodnight and well-wishes.

Turbos are horrible. I have never understood why car manufacturers use them. There are other ways to boost power. When a turbo dies, it’s mega bucks to replace one and also, they make cars drive like Sherman tanks.
