Here’s the picture of Sophie nursing her babies that I mentioned yesterday, excuse the linty ass looking black towel. There’s a good reason not to buy black towels eh?:
They’re laying in the kitty playpen I made outside the nesting box. Sophie seems to like that, it gives her more room to stretch out and nurse. She had the kittens out there all night last night and they were still there when we left this morning.
You can see the bare spot on what’s left of the tail on the kitten second over from the right. That’s the kitty we had to take to the vet for a tail amputation. It’s healed over nicely, now we’re just waiting for hair to grow in.
The kittens are keeping their eyes open more and I noticed last night that one kitten had a small looking eye. Upon closer inspection I discovered that it hasn’t opened all the way. Today is day 14 and everything I’ve read said that if the kittens eyes weren’t all the way opened by now they should be taken to the vet and the vet can open them. I also read that you can try to do this yourself at home by wetting the eye with a cotton ball and gently trying to pull the lids apart. I’m going to try that if the eye hasn’t opened up all the way when we get home, if it doesn’t come open easily we’ll probably be taking another trip to the vet.
They seem to be seeing more. They were sitting up watching me last night. This morning I was sitting in the closet with them and Sophie was on my lap. They were sitting up watching her. It’s so cute, a couple of them sit up like big cats now. I saw two standing up all the way too this morning! They can take a couple real steps and then they tumble over onto their back. One of the black one’s was playing with Sophie’s whiskers this morning too. 🙂
We’re going grocery shopping tonight. I gave up on the delivery service. They don’t sell enough variety of stuff that I like. They’re working on expanding their selection so we might try them again in the future. Anyway, I’m going to pick up some soft, canned kitten food for the kittens to try out next week. I’ll start them with that and dry food soaked in water. I’m sure that’ll make for some funny pictures because you know they’re going to get themselves covered in it at first. 🙂
It’s so cool looking down into those sweet little, curious faces. You can actually see curiousity in their eyes when they look up at you now. It’s not just a blank stare and they’re not afraid of me, or unsure of me like they were when they first saw me. They look up at me like “Who are you?” and they know who their mommy is, you can tell when they look at her. Despite the worry and frustration this has to be the coolest thing I’ve ever gotten to do.
So, work. I still have nothing to do. Nothing at all. I finished up the emind Microsoft word expert user course. Yippee. It’s not like it was hard or anything. I started one on powerpoint yesterday and I’m not really enjoying it. I might let it sit for awhile and try out some different stuff this morning. All I know is I’m bored.
We had an interesting night last night. As I was finishing up paying bills hubby said we had a problem. When I asked him what it was he showed me a pile of sawdust underneath his desk and some fresh holes in the wood. He said he thought the desk we had brought in from the barn had termites. Ick. So we went out to Lowe’s and picked up some termite spray. Then we had to come home, clear all the animals out of the room, this happens to be the room my fish, the hamster and Vicki live in. Then we saturated the desk in termite killer. It didn’t dry until this morning so Vicki, the hamster, and the fish had to spend the night elsewhere in the house. Vicki does NOT like spending the night elsewhere in the house. The fish and hamster didn’t care. 🙂 Anyway, we put the room back together this morning and are hoping this took care of the problem. We’ll be keeping an eye. Hopefully the termites didn’t spread beyond the desk. Worst case scenario we call an exterminator, we’re going to have to spray the barn and probably set some of those ground traps. The house has termite guards so as long as they didn’t spread from the table we should be good. Only thing we have to worry about is the barn, well that and the chicken coop has termites too I think. Ground traps out there would probably be a good idea too. I love living in an old house in the sticks!!! *rolls eyes* and all the problems that come with it.
Anyway, I think I’m going to go check and make sure my paycheck went through today. 🙂 And then go book our hotel room in Oklahoma for our trip.
Edit: Room is booked. 🙂 yay!
Also, more news I forgot. Sara and Kenny touched noses this morning!! I didn’t get to see it but hubby said they touched noses and Kenny let Sara sniff down his back. He didn’t like her sniffing his butt though so he ran off when she tried to go there. 🙂 Anyone that has read me for awhile will know that about a year ago Kenny was attacked by a very prey oriented dog we brought home from the pound. We ended up giving her to my mother in law who had recently suffered the loss of a dog she’d had for many years. When we got Sara 5 months later we weren’t sure how Kenny would do. He hid under the bed from the tiny puppy for 2 days and now, 7 months later he’s letting Sara, our now nearly full grown golden retriever sniff him. 🙂 Much improved, took awhile but now Kenny knows that not all dogs are going to try to hurt him. So yay! 🙂
Sophie sure is a pretty cat! Too bad she’s a brat ….. You must be getting excited about the trip!
