I got an e-mail from my mom last night that started out. “Not sure if you’ll get this, I’ve heard about the massive power outages up your way”. It was 9:20pm and I’d heard nothing about any massive power outages. 🙂 Our power had gone out at home, not unusual though, once a week or so the power flickers during the day in our area. BUT the power had gone out in Sam’s Club, as soon as we walked in the lights went off and the backup lights came on. It was business as usual, no one even looked surprised, or concerned. We got the things we needed and checked out. By the end of the shopping trip I’d forgotten the power was even out. I’m used to low light as that’s the way I keep my house so I forgot about it completely. 🙂 We stopped at Friendlys for dinner, nothing unusual there except hubby heard some older ladys talking about his Aunt. Then we left and went to Agway for chicken feed. The traffic light by Agway was out. Then we went home and watched a movie and I worked on my cross-stitch. It wasn’t until I was headed to bed that I got the e-mail from my mom and checked the news at ctnow.com. Hopefully everyone who is without power will have power again really soon. It’s going to be another hot day and I feel really sorry for everyone with no A/C and stuff. I enjoy it when the power goes out at night to be completely honest. Lighting the house with candles and oil lamps reminds me of stories my grandma used to tell me and considering our house was built “back in the day” you get to experience a little bit of what it was like before they had power. *shrugs* I’m weird like that though.
In other news, I’ve got a cold. I feel like complete crap but I had to get up for work this morning. I realized yesterday as I was leaving work that I fucked up. I read my calendar wrong and was supposed to have completed the telephone directory update for the little pain in the ass company on the 8th floor. heh, uh, oops. Problem with this is that those people are evil, and unforgiving. So I have today to get the changes made, compiled into an executible, tested and released. I will get it done, never fear. 🙂
Not a lot else going on. We have absolutely no plans for this weekend, which is probably a good thing considering I’m now infected with an evil cold virus. I would have liked to have gone hiking this weekend but uh, not if I’m still sick.
Anyway, I better get to work on that directory.
Edit: Interesting. I just got word that several streets including the bridge we come over in the morning to get into Hartford is closed down. There’s a “suspicious” package outside a book store. The store is a couple blocks from our building. I’ll post more after we find out what’s up. My guess is that it’s nothing to worry about or anything. There have been several harmless “suspicious” packages in Hartford in the past couple years. Today is the perfect day to plant one too considering the power outages already have some people paranoid. I’ll post what it was if I find out.
Update: Well, whatever was out in front of the book store is gone now. Dunno what it was.
Traffic snarled in downtown Hartford
Friday August 15, 2003
HARTFORD, Conn. (AP) A bomb scare in downtown Hartford snarled traffic Friday morning.
State police were called in to help after Hartford police reported a suspicious device had been found in a building in the Old Statehouse area.
State police spokesman Sgt. Paul Vance said the local police department requested that the Founders Bridge and all associated exit and entrance ramps be shut down.
“It could be just a false report and if that’s the case fine. But any time we get this type of report it’s got to be treated as real. It’s got to be treated seriously,” Vance said.
Some downtown Hartford streets in the area were also blocked off by local police and the Hartford bomb squad had responded.
Vance said the state police bomb squad was on standby.

Everyone is so histrionic right now over things that used to seem so simple. When the grid went down yesterday, the first thing I heard on the radio was “NOT TERRORISTS.” I didn’t even think about terrorists. And now a simple package is a bomb. I know it’s good to be overly cautious; we were too lax before 9-11. But I still wish everything would get back to normal.
