New job?

My interview for this new position went really well. The team is fantastic. It is engaging and meaningful work. However, it is a 20% paycut, with a daily commute, and less flexibility. Still more lenient than most, but more of a regular 9-5. If I really needed to quit my job, it would be the best local alternative I could hope for. They already called me back for a second round interview.

However, I walked into my meeting at HQ on Tuesday with my old supervisor and my new supervisor and said, “So, I have some news. I am getting a divorce. I will have sole physical custody of my children. I can’t continue to travel like this. I can travel for up to three days once per quarter, but I can not come to HQ monthly and I can not facilitate week-long NSO trainings anymore.”

They stuttered for a moment and then both said something along the lines of, “Okay…we can make that work.”

Then I said, “Okay, good. Glad we are on the same page.”

This was after our discussions of what I could bring to my new department of course – I am not completely lacking in strategic planning and political guile. At least something in life is working out as planned.
