pulled pork and cole slaw

Let me just say there’s nothing better than a pulled pork bbq sandwich with some cole slaw on top. Chris and I were watching the travel channel (although it’s acting like the food network). At first they had a big thing on pizza – lots and lots of chicago style pizza everywhere. Man I wanted pizza, but Chris had it for lunch.

The travel channel proceeded in their “I’m acting like the food network” ways and went on to an all-out bbq war between North Carolina, Memphis, Texas, and Kansas City bbq styles. At that point we were just about dying for barbeque so I ran out and got pulled pork sandwiches from our amazing local barbeque joint that’s 5 minutes from the apartment. So tender, so moist… so delicious. I’m not sure who invented putting cole slaw ON the sandwich (someone in or around Williamsburg back in the day probably) but it’s just absolute genius.

I often lament the fact that I’m now right on the border of being living in a southern city – waaay too much country music in these parts – but I guess there are benefits. Like having a local barbeque place whose owner frequently walks around and chats with you. Kind of a strange fellow, but that’s ok – his barbeque is fucking amazing. (this city also tends to make me drop my g’s in “ing” – thinkin’ eatin’ playin’ drivin’ fuckin’). If I start to go too redneck or country or southern on you please put me in my place.

That’s probably one of the most interesting parts of this state. I’m from about 4 – 4.5 hours north of where I now live. Same state, completely different. Where I’m originally from you would NEVER hear country music in a public place. Here – pretty common. Up north you just have the typical midwestern accent – even a little east coasty at times. Down here? Yeah we’ve got a bit of a twang. Up there? Liberal. Down here? Unfortunately we’re kind of in the Bible belt. But that’s ok – my friends are down here, my jobs down here, and I’m honestly starting to like it. It’s a bit more diverse too (maybe just where I live, but in general I think it’s still more diverse).

But anyway – damn that barbeque was good.

When we firt moved to NC, their version of BBQ seemed very alien. But it grows on you. With their pork consumption (and fried foods), no surprise that the South has a stroke rate 25% higher than the national average.
