opinions, elections, debates… speak your mind

Well, let me tell you… once again I am very much in this take action mood. I find myself having an opinion on almost everything as of late, and yes I am challenging others. Take, for example, English class. As of late we’ve been doing group presentations with students acting as the teacher. This, of course, is wonderful because we are able to have some pretty interesting or at least debateable discussions. Today I’m not sure I could have been more vocal on my thoughts.

Glenn, you must know, is by far the most opinionated person I have ever had the, hmm pleasure doesn’t seem like the right word, of meeting. Granted, he’s a very deep kid and I enjoy the fact that he speaks his mind and can really contribute to a discussion. However, I don’t always happen to agree with him. Like today. *grins* Or rather, the past 4 days. If he says something I don’t agree with or see differently I raise my hand and I give my peace. Lol, unfortunately he thinks I’m shooting him down and has the impression I think I’m smarter than everyone else. Oh, contrare! Everyone is allowed their view, but everyone is also allowed to openly disagree and discuss. If I cut you down, it’s because you cut another down, or made a statement that simply is not true or does not fit the discussion at all. It’s not as if he was the only person I was arguing with… goodness. I rather enjoy listening to what he has to say… finally someone willing to speak their mind! When he taught the class, I thought it was probably the best class we’d had so far that year. But I don’t believe I will tell him that. Not as if his head needs to be inflated. Speaking of inflation… yeah maybe my ego could use a chop or two.

Yesterday were junior (to be senior) class elections. I am proud to say I excercise my right to vote! I am not, however, proud to say that none of the intelligent people won. The voting polls must have been swayed by the vast majority of morons who are in my class. Too bad they had to be democratic for once in their lives. There were some parts of the ballot that I simply refused to vote for anyone. Take, for example, the girl, the only person I might add, who ran for student council treasurer. (there were elections for senior class officers and student council officers) I can’t stand this girl… she and I were the editors for the junior high newspaper my freshman year. Or rather, I was the editor, though we were both referred to as editors. So why would I want to vote for her? I left it blank. Unfortunately, most people don’t know that even if there’s only one person running, they still require a majority vote. If the majority of voters leaves it blank, I suppose they have to take a re-vote or something. I think everyone just checks it off anyway. Bah.

Furthermore! I really cannot stand the posters that are cluttering the halls of my high school. “vote for ____!!” Riiight. We had some that said “Steve is voting for Mike for ____. Mike is voting for Steve for ___.” Who cares?? I sure don’t… And others that had the corny teeny-bopper version of words: “Vote ____ 4 vice president!” Wait, did you mean FOR? And we even had this classic poster (in more than one spot): “Vote Annie for secretay”. Now why in the world would we want a secretary that cannot spell? And she WON! It really is a pitiful, pathetic thing for a class such as mine to vote. Call me an elitest.

The group that presented in English class today gave us the most horrible homework assignment you could possibly imagine. I’ll let you read it:

30 lines, skip lines, number by 5’s
Prompt: Choose one grandparent and one parent. Describe their career and profession in relation to their work ethic. In this description include the attitudes that they had to their work, such as commitment, enjoyment of their job, or the level of work that they put into it. State whether or not you admire these traits. Lastly, discuss what you want to do with your life and how the attitudes towards the career or work ethics of those that you observed have affected your decisions.

DUMB! This is what I think of it, and yes I actually wrote this down, though they won’t ever see this, and I haven’t actually started the assignment yet:

*Just as a note, I think this assignment was incredibly stupid. It was a poorly thought out, poorly written prompt that lacks any depth of thought in the required response. It is entirely too specific…

This is where I left off, but allow me to continue:

and not at all condusive to the various situations of fellow classmates. Perhaps had we read the poem to which this assigment is directed it may have helped trigger some thought. However, this appears to be a face value assignment. It is not personal, it does not enter our minds or true goals at all. It simply asks questions that we, in return, are expected to answer. Toward is never towards, by the way, it is always toward. Check your grammar.

Anyone agree? Well, you might not, but I don’t really care. It’s my opinion, and had you read the title, you would have known what to expect. 😛

I feel so enlightened after reading your entry! 🙂 But really, I hate dumb assignments, there’s no point, we don’t learn anything, and it’s just more for the teacher to grade. BAH. I am swimming in reports and projects lately. Double Bah. The end of the school year is always frickin obnoxious.

you go girl 🙂 Or something along those lines, that’s equally as cheesy 😛

As you can see erin dear I don’t write in it much, but it’s just there. That’s all. Sorry I didn’t tell you about it, but I just made it public. But yeah. I’m back!
