one last summer night
I sat on the rough grass simply staring off into the sky. My hand brushed down by my side, noticing the dampness of the lawn, but somehow not quite minding it. The sky… such a beautiful thing. Mesmerizing. I notice that I’m obsessed by it day and night. Sunrise, daylight, sunset, starry night… all different. All serene. All breath-taking. And tonight was no exception.
I lie there waiting for the stars to blur into vision, one by one… becoming pin-points of light… mere spots. How incredible to see something from so far? Yet they seem so close. My eyes begin to play tricks. Is that a star, or are my eyes imagining it? And what is that brightest star which looks upon me? Each intrigues me… each draws me into its secrets. I look toward the rather yellow moon hovering above the tree line. It’s an odd shade… almost eerie.
A line of clouds moves in swiftly. Not storm clouds, no not on a crisp night like this, but dusty, painted clouds. As they float across there are just enough spaces and ripples to see the moon peeking through every few moments. Amazing how one can see the layers of the sky… the clouds, the moon, the stars. The movement of the clouds makes it somehow 3D, somehow… REAL. The scene is perfect… a clouded moon resting above the trees on a calm night.
Even as I gaze into the night, I hear the life around me. The chirp of crickets mixes with the whir of the locusts. Shicka-shicka-shicka-ch-ch-ch-ch-ch-ch-chhhhhh-bzzzzzzzzzzz… Somewhere above me a bird calls out from a branch, and I smile. Did I interpret this nature as silence? A void of all human interaction, perhaps, but never silent. Even in the hush of night a great music and rhythm surrounds, never ceasing.
I breathe in the air… I take in the stars… I watch as the clouds pass by the moon… I feel the grass… I hear the creatures… I am content.
