Today was a very interesting day. The morning, as usual, came with arraignments. The unusual part, was the fact that there were, once again, about 6 or 7 people in jail. How is it possible for that many people to be out driving drunk (most of them) on a Monday night? At any rate, the morning went pretty smoothly, and I once again filed things for the bailiffs. A few cases regarding some of the people in jail came in really late, so we had to squeeze about two arraignments in at the last minute.

At 11:10am, Ron and Charlie took me with them to an eviction. It took place in MOL, which meant a MOL police official had to meet us there. The renter also was present, with her maintenance man to change the locks. The woman was not home when we got to her apartment, so the locks were quickly changed, and a sign was put up that reported that it was a Court locked apartment. It was strange to be kicking someone out of their home, but at the same time, we all knew the woman had not paid the rent.

I went out to lunch with the bailiffs for a second day in a row, since we were already out for the eviction. After lunch, Don and Bob took me with them to go check on immobilized cars. We checked two that were being held at a residence, then made rounds to all three towing companies. In some instances, older cars are left at the impound lots by owners. If they’ve been there for long enough, the costs for storage in the lots is worth more than the actual car, therefore not making sense for people to pay for them. After a certain period of time, the court can hand the titles of the car to the towing company, who will in turn sell the car to make the money they’re owed. Today one bought about 13 of the cars on their lot.

The bailiffs also pick up license plates when they go to the tow lots, so that they can hold them until the $100 fee is paid. We picked up plates from two places, and dropped off some clubs at the third. They had apparently just acquired several of our “customers.”
