Movies, History, Whatever

It’s been a few days since I’ve written but things have been fairly uneventful. My husband met with the president of that small company and things went well. They want him to come in Tuesday (that would be tomorrow) at 10am to meet with the IT team and his headhunter thinks they will offer him the position at that time. Let’s hope so. Again, it’s a little less than what he was making before, but at least it’s full-time and permanent. In the meantime he began a consulting position today that will take him through until the end of the year if this full-time thing falls through, all this while he’s still receiving a few more days of severance pay plus a big final lump sum so we’re still okay financially, just nervous.

I got to church yesterday but was pretty tuckered out by the time I got home. I am still not even close to fully recovered. I worked today for 4.5 hours but was exhausted afternoon so made my way home and rested. I hope my energy comes back soon. I haven’t had any pain medicine since Friday but the pain isn’t bad if I’m just lounging around. I was pretty sensitive when I was driving and sitting at my desk, but reclining here on the couch with the laptop and a blanket, I’m not in any pain at all.

I was sorry to see the Diary Master’s entry saying our entries are gone forever. What a bummer. I think I had all of mine saved (or at least most of them) anyway, but it’s too bad that happened. Strangely, that’s exactly what I wrote to him about before I bought my subscription. I particularly asked him what sort of safety net he had and what sort of back up system so that the entries would be safe because I had two computers crash on me at one time once and realized how fragile my diary entries really could be if I didn’t have alternate back-ups for them. He assured me he had great back-ups in place and could only lose a week’s worth at most. I would be devastated if all my entries for those months were completely gone. Geeze. As it is, I’m unhappy about losing a couple of people who I had read a few times who disappeared off the face of the earth. Well, I guess that’s life in the Internet.

Still sort of existing in the world of television, I got caught up in this movie that was absolutely riveting. As I may have mentioned in one of my recent entries, I am very drawn to Indian movies (Indian, as in India). I love watching movies and reading about other cultures but I seem to particularly enjoy Indian movies. Usually I find them light and amusing. The production values are not of the highest quality but I enjoy them, especially if they’re subtitled. I’ve seen a two recently, however, that are really of a much higher quality than I’m used to. One was more of a comedy, Monsoon Wedding. I would recommend it. The other, however, I just saw for the first time on Saturday and it was called Earth. This movie was so good that I found it replayed on Sunday morning and taped it so I could watch it again after church. This movie was absolutely outstanding but any standards.

Earth was a movie about the violence in India when it was given its independence in 1947 (something which I was completely unfamiliar with as I was terrible high school student and never paid attention in class possibly because I had horrible history teachers who made nothing come to life). The movie was based upon a book entitled Cracking India (which I just ordered from Amazon) and is one of the most powerful movies I think I’ve ever seen. It’s from the point of view of an 8 year old girl whose hometown is being split in two as the violence between the Muslims and Hindus escalates. I don’t want to say too much about it because I would rather recommend it and let the movie unfold for anyone who views it the way it unfolded for me. It is subtitled but the subtitles are clear and easy to read unlike some of these movies where the words are white on white half the time. The acting is fantastic. The plot unfolds believably. This is an epic. I can’t tell you how impressed I was with this movie and what an impression it made on me. I see LOTS of movies. I love ‘em, but I don’t get swept up in them all that easily. And, when I do, I don’t always recommend them to others because I know they’re sometimes just appealing to something in my own imagination. This one, however, is a masterpiece.

The director has another that came out prior to Earth, called Fire. I intend to rent that. I ought to be able to find it someplace. And she has one called Water that’s in production. Anyway, this movie has just been haunting me. I never saw the move, Ghandi, so I may rent that too. I read that it was about similar subject matter so I might find it really interesting. I hate being so ignorant. No one at all in my high school ever taught us about this stuff. No one ever taught us about the holocaust. I think I had the worst history teachers in the world. I remember learning about the Medieval times and the French revolution in junior year World History then learning about Supreme Court Cases in senior year American History (the most boring class I’ve ever taken in my life). Anything else I’ve ever learned about history I learned on my own either by reading, traveling, or watching documentaries because I was interested and wanted to know. The teaching I had in school was absolutely ludicrous considering how interesting history CAN be. There is no excuse for a teacher or a book to be as deadly boring as mine was in high school. Oh well, enough ranting about that.

Your husband still needs good luck (or prayers!), so here’s some for him. Your pain sounds a lot more manageable now, thank goodness.. Glad you had your diary entries backed up: I now have to restore mine. BTW, I really like Indian films too, particularly the music!
