Faith Hope and Love
So now faith, hope, and love abide, these three; but the greatest of these is love.
1 Cor 13:13
It never really struck me before that love is greater in God’s eyes than faith. I pay so much attention to Romans 8 and get so overcome by my own doubts, stumbling and lack of faith. Reading this today was like a wonderful frying pan to the head. Love is the most important.
Honestly, I do better in the love department than in the faith department. My hope vacillates as well. But love, well… I really strive for that. It’s easier to do love because it’s very verb-y. It’s an ACTION word. You DO love. It’s hard to DO faith.
I guess you can pray, try to “convince” yourself to believe, but even the Bible says that Jesus is the “author of your faith.” Love, however, well… that you can actually do by being committed to looking after the best interests of somebody else besides yourself – a statement from a sermon our pastor preached on love that set into my heart so deeply I actually got the word, “Committed,” (with a cross on one of the “t’s”) on my arm above my inner wrist. That’s to remind me of my focus. Committed to others best interests (I try), committed to God, committed to Jesus.
I really fail but…
Jesus is all about love, mercy, forgiveness – how did this obviousness about love coming first completely escape me until now?!?!?
Love is the main course. Faith and hope are it’s sides. Together is feast.
