Another 1999 Entry (Carrots)

Life

Today I peeled a carrot. Do you know how long it’s been since I peeled a carrot? In my old job I had to do whatever I could to save time, thus I began to buy pre-cleaned carrots and celery. With this job I have more time, but less money. I read somewhere that the difference in cost between the pre-cleaned and the uncleaned carrots was vast and that it made money-sense to go with the uncleaned ones so I figured I should go back to those.

I stood at the sink with a bunch of carrots that my little boy had picked out. They had green ends hanging from them and he joked that he was Bugs Bunny saying, “What’s up, doc?” As I scraped the carrot the scent rose like perfume. It was a forgotten aroma. Life had been too busy for carrots. I closed my eyes and breathed in, amazed at what a difference it makes in life to actually be able to stop and enjoy the scent of a carrot.
