Optimism

I think someone up there must like us. Alan was able to use his cell phone yesterday while he was in Hartford so I actually got to talk to him. I also found out that instead of a nasty cold Missouri winter, he’ll be in the relatively balmy temperatures of South Carolina. They overbooked the BCT program at Ft. Leonard Wood, so they took a few guys and sent them to Ft. Jackson, just outside of Columbia. Alan’s kicking himself a little because he brought a winter jacket for the flight home at Christmas, but I feel good about the change. South Carolina is more familiar. I can wrap my mind around it more easily than I can Missouri because I’ve been there. I know the relative positions of the major cities. I know what the landscape is like. I can picture him there.

Anyway, I’m hoping to hear from him at least once more by phone to tell me his mailing address. I told him not to risk his phone cutting in and out and to repeat himself loudly and spell things out in Army alphabet, just to make sure I get it 100%. I’m not taking chances, especially since I’ve already written him a letter and am now just waiting on that information to send it.

I’m not sure what happens at Thanksgiving. I think they have a few days off. So perhaps you can see another source of my optimism? That’s right… I’ll be in South Carolina for Thanksgiving. Maybe there’s the slimmest chance of me seeing him for a little while. And at least when I go to his graduation  later in the winter I won’t have to dress for an arctic excursion, since they always have them outside.
