does your vet truly care?

we have been going to the woodside animal hospital in our home town since we moved here and they always seemed to do right by us with our animals. well of course, the staff and vets come and go there and so now its all new staff and a new vet. we took beau because he was losing lots of weight very quickly. my mom had researched online and it seemed to be all the symptoms of diabetes. drinking and eating a ton and still losing weight.

well the doctor said his glucose levels were normal and it wasnt his thyroid because if dogs have problems with their thyroid they gain weight. so he pretty much said beau most likely had some sort of cancer and that we should not wait until he got to only 25 pounds. we agreed because we dont want him in pain. any way my mom decided to take him to a different vet that was about an hour and a half drive away, just to get a second opinion. she wanted to know FOR SURE that it wasn’t something else. well when she got back she said "guess waht, beau has diabetes!"

I was like "What?! Really? But I thought that his glucose levels were normal?"

Well it turns out that there are different tests you can run because there are different forms of diabetes in dogs. Why our vet in our home town didn’t run those tests I don’t know. Either way we are sending them the report from this new vet to get the point across. Now we get to keep him for a few more years maybe! Who knows!

This just shows me that if a vet really cares, they will do EVERYTHING they can to know for CERTAIN that all possibilities of other problems are crossed off before assuming cancer or some deadly disease. We could have lost beau if we didn’t get a second opinion. If that vet knew about those tests for other forms of diabetes, you would think that our regular vet would as well. It’s just laziness. No excuse.

*sigh*

I wonder if the vet my parents take their dogs to really cares. It always seems that the answer this vet gives them is the “put it to sleep” thing. Of course, they always wait until something is horribly wrong to take them to a vet and they have already put one dog to sleep. The other two are still around, and are happy for now. I wish I could afford to care for the dogs better than my parents do.

Wow that is awful your vet didnt look closer! They really should do everything possible, as any doctor would do for a human. good to hear beau is okay!

oh i totally know what u mean. we took our dog Tucker to the vet over in purdy bc my mom felt a bump on his throat and they told her it was nothing and then it kept getting bigger so she took him to a diff vet and they told her it was cancer. it was too late to save him by then. 🙁
