Request

Yesterday my friends asked to borrow my uterus. (ok, so they asked it more politely than that, but that was the basic idea) Definitely one of the most awkward conversations I’ve ever had in my life.

I’m friends with a gay couple who have been trying to adopt for a long time. A while back, they thought they had found a birthmother, but she changed her mind. I do feel really bad for them, because it’s HARD for a gay couple to find someone who wants to give them a baby! And these two would be wonderful parents.

So they asked me to meet them for coffee yesterday, and were all weird and formal about inviting me, which made me think that maybe they found out they were getting a baby and wanted to tell me or something. But no, it was actually that they wanted to ask me if I would have a baby for them.

I know some people do the surrogate thing and it actually works, but I don’t really understand how. After seeing how attached I got to my baby before she was even born, I can’t even imagine going through all of that and then just handing the baby over to someone else. And they were apparently thinking they would use my egg….so pretty much, they were asking me to give them MY baby.

So…I said no. Obviously. I felt bad about it, though, because I’m sure that’s not exactly an easy thing to get up the nerve to ask. And I know they’re really frustrated with the whole adoption process, especially after they went through the whole thing where they thought they were going to get a baby and it fell through at the last minute. I guess I should feel really lucky that I was able to get accidentally pregnant.
