In our paper there is a headline today:

ISRAEL WILL GO THE WAY OF USSR!!!

Iran’s hard-line president  said yesterday that ISRAEL will one day be "wiped out" just like the Soviet Union was, drawing applause from participants in a world conference that casts doubt on the Holocaust during the second WW.

TEHRAN – Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad yesterday told delegates at an international conference questioning the Holocaust that Israel’s days are numbered.

Mr. Ahmadinejad, who has sparked international outcry by referring to the killing of six million Jews in the Second World War as a "myth" and calling for Israel to be "wiped off the map," launched another verbal attack on the Jewish state.

"Thanks to people’s wishes and God’s will, the trend for the existence of the Zionist regime is downwards and this is what God has promised and what all nations want," he said. "Just as the Soviet Union was wiped out and today does not exist, so will the Zionist regime soon be wiped out."

The Iranian President’s remarks were condemned in Washington. U.S. State Department spokesman Sean McCormack told reporters that the Iranian President’s behaviour was "despicable" and called his comment "absolutely outrageous."

Stephen Harper yesterday said the idea of conference dedicated to denying the Holocaust is an offence to all Canadians.

The Prime Minister added: "I want to condemn, in the strongest terms, this latest example of anti-Israeli and racist statements from the President of Iran."

The Vatican, Germany and the European Commission added their voices to others — such as the United States and Israel — who have condemned the Tehran meeting.

Tony Blair, the British Prime Minister, said it was "shocking beyond belief " that Iran had even organized the conference.

The Islamic Republic said its purpose was to shed light on the reasons behind the formation of the state of Israel after the Second World War.

The threat from Israel "has caused the regional countries to divert their resources from development to spending them on purchasing arms which will increase discord among them," Mr. Ahmadinejad told the meeting.

"If the Holocaust’s truth is ruled out, root causes of problems and crimes in the Middle East will be terminated," he said.

Iran also said it was holding the conference to allow researchers from countries where it is a crime to question the Holocaust to speak freely.

"Iran is your home and is the home of all freedom seekers of the world," Mr. Ahmadinejad said. "Here you can express your views and exchange opinions in a friendly, brotherly and free atmosphere."

He urged countries where Holocaust denial is a crime to respect freedom of speech and not

to take action against any of the conference participants.

Human rights groups frequently number Iran as one of the world’s worst violators of free speech, where scores of newspapers have been closed, journalists jailed, access to Web sites blocked and government critics hounded out of the country.

The Bush administration yesterday condemned the Tehran conference and said the U.S. maintains support for those in Iran who stand against oppression.

"The gathering of Holocaust deniers in Tehran is an affront to the entire civilized world, as well as to the traditional Iranian values of tolerance and mutual respect," White House Press Secretary Tony Snow said in a statement issued in Washington.

"The Iranian regime perversely seeks to call the historical fact of those atrocities into question and provide a platform for hatred," Mr. Snow said. "The United States will continue to support those in Iran and elsewhere who seek to promote human rights and dignity."

The Canadian Jewish Congress also denounced the meeting.

"This conference was nothing more than a vicious public attempt to whitewash the proven facts that the Nazis and their collaborators carried out mass murder against millions of Jewish men, women and children," said national president Ed Morgan in a news release.

"The Iranian government organized this farce of a conference as a tool to de-legitimize the Jewish people, and therefore, the Jewish state of Israel," Mr. Morgan said. "Iran is using the Holocaust as a weapon, but people of good conscience the world over see this for what it truly is – anti- Semitism, plain and simple. That includes students at Tehran University and many other Iranians who have protested against the conference," he said, "and we salute them for their courage and commitment to truth."

Delegates at the meeting earlier yesterday agreed to form a "fact-finding" committee to study the Holocaust.

The head of the new committee, identified as Iranian academic Mohammad cMohammad Ali Ramin, said its members were "not racist or opposed to any particular group."

"Rather they are just seeking the truth to set humanity truly free," the ISNA students news agency quoted him as saying, without naming the committee members.

Robert Faurisson, a French scholar who has described the Holocaust as a "historical lie," said the committee included members from the United States, France, Canada, Switzerland, Austria, Iran, Bahrain and Syria, ISNA reported.

The possible presence of a Canadianon the committee could not be confirmed last night.

The Vatican called the Holocaustan "immense tragedy" that had to remain forever a warning for all people to respect the rights of others.

German Chancellor Angela Merkel said the meeting "shows the danger of the situation Israel is in and in particular the threat that Israel lives under."

She was speaking after meeting Ehud Olmert, who was on his first visit to Germany as Israeli Prime Minister.

Germany has made it a priority to support Israel since the Holocaust under the Nazis and the end of the Second World War in 1945.

EU Commissioner Franco Frattini expressed "shock and indignation," adding: "Anti-Semitism has no place in Europe; nor should it in any other part of the world."

Good for you for posting this entry. What happened in Europe during the first half of the 20th century is so hard to understand that some human beings are so ignorant and cruel. One can wonder if the good people of the world will ever have peace. I do think that having this stupid conference in Iran will backfire on the perpatrators and participants. Damn them all!!!

I agree totally with Fred. Ahmadinejad is one dangerous dude. He feels the same way about America as he does Israel, scary isn’t it?

Do you mind if I borrow parts of this?

Yes, we MUST stand up for Israel. They have a tough job protecting their very existance – if it takes a fight, WE MUST FIGHT. 🙁

I agree America must stand up for Israel and we must NEVER turn our back on Israel!!

Was Mel Gibson there too?

RYN: Yes I have several lovers and no I don’t have sex with hubby. He “jokingly” told me to get a lover and I “jokingly” said I would do that and never let him know a thing about it. K has been coming around for 5 years but it is no love affair. The others are just sex as well. It’s not like the movies. It’s just a physical need being fulfilled.
