Looks like I did know what I was talking about…

Hubby’s parents are from NY and seem to think they know more than anyone else on any given subject.

The in-laws have been in the market for a new car and will only buy a Mercury Grand Marquis.  They did not like what was available in California and decided there were plenty in Texas.  I talked to them about California emissions and even suggested they check states closer to California.  Nope – Texas was the done deal.

They got a one-way flight to Texas and bought a beautiful 2010 Mercury Grand Marquis with leather seats.  They drove home and headed to the DMV the next day to get it registered.  Lo and behold.. a sticker inside the hood states – Not for Sale in California.  They have been on the phone with the DMV, the dealer in Texas and Ford’s Corporate Offices.  After a week, the conclusion is – the car has been red-flagged in California and cannot be registered here.

They have contacted a dealership in Las Vegas that have several Grand Marquis’ on their lot and are willing to assist them.  They have to trade in the car they bought in Texas and purchase one in Nevada that is equipped to pass California emissions.  They will be out at least $8,000 on purchasing another car – not to mention the cost of traveling to Las Vegas and spending two nights in a hotel there.

Perhaps they should have listened to their uneducated daughter-in-law…!!!

Wow! I honestly didn’t realize emission standards are different from one state to another. Does that mean Texas needs to raise its standards?

RYN, I’m going to add your name to my contacts and we can play Words with Friends!

My grandmother had one of those. It gave her trouble from the day she bought it. She traded it in for a Lincoln town car. It tells her when she’s about to hit something, has heated seats, and other goodies I know nothing about. It seems like an upgrade to me though. Maybe next time they’ll listen to you but some people never change. Feels good to be right though.

RYN: I worry that I scare off the kidless people of the world with my entries. I thought I made a valid point, and didn’t just jump into my decision. đŸ™‚ Most choices, I do tend to over think, but I typically don’t share them in such detail.

OMG… your inlaws sound like MY inlaws (except mine are uneducated people). I can SO see my MIL doing something (maybe not to the extent of flying to another state for a car, but something equally stupid!).

I did not know they put stickers saying not registered in other states. Funny that the emissions are worse in Tx, when the air quality is so much worse in Cali. I am in Texas, but all my family lives in San Jose.
