Quick guide to emo

THE emo movement began in the US and was quickly picked up by angst-ridden adolescents.

It spread via the internet and became a huge phenomenon.

It is claimed the underground subculture encourages teens to wallow in misery and glorifies self-harm.

Emo kids have been found swapping tips online about how best to display wrist scars.

One urban legend, believed to be a hoax, tells of a boy from California who posted a suicide note on his myspace website then shot himself.

Their typical uniform includes dyed black hair layered over the face and heavy eyeliner, even for boys.

Dark-coloured T-shirts bearing the names of bands are popular for emo lads, while girls like tight black jeans, polkadots and leopard print accessories.

Lip-piercing, heavy-rimmed glasses and black hair extensions are also key elements of the emo uniform.

Other emo groups include Fall Out Boy, Panic! At the Disco, Dashboard Confessional and Funeral For A Friend.

The chorus of a tongue-in-cheek song about emo culture, which has become popular on the web, sums up the movement:

“Stop my breathing and slit my throat. I must be an emo.

“I don’t jump around when I go to shows, I must be an emo.

“Dye in my hair and polish on my toes, I must be an emo.

“I play guitar and write suicide notes, I must be an emo.”

Thought this was rather amusing.. like a guide to Emo for adults! A bit stereotypical though!
