Memorial Day Weekend Update

We put in an offer on a house…

I took Friday off from work. We went to go do our laundry and viewed a house. It was a 3 bed/2 bath single story house. It was pretty small, but the back yard was such a nice size. Unfortunately, the house itself was only 1070sqft… so we’d be out of space within 5 – 10 years of a kid being born. The price was attractive at 130k.

On the way to meet my mom (and sister) for dinner, we picked up fliers for a couple of houses and I showed Twin around Auburn. At dinner, which was alright. Of course there were comments that struck Twin and I as off-hand. Upon learning we’d have a garage, my mom said "I can bring my car over for you to fix the transmission." There’s so many issues with that statement: 1. She has a garage. 2. I have better things to do with my time. 3. She doesn’t drive the car and should just sell the damn thing. My mom bought a gift card for Lowe’s, because Home Depot sponsors a Toyota in NASCAR. My sister even put in a jab, "its not all about gas mileage" after I commented what kind of fuel mileage a 1992 Blazer with hydraulics and a V8 would get. They did recommend a house for us to look at…

Twin fell in love with that house, even though it was priced high. That is the house we put an offer in on Sunday. It was listed at 180k, 3 bed/2 bath with 1,700 sqft. We came in at 160k seller pays closing costs. All the other houses in the neighborhood sold for 150k, and houses in the area are still losing a little bit of their value. We’ll see what they counter-offer. They have until 9 PM tonight.

We did look at 3 other houses on Sunday. One was absolutely trashed and needed a lot of work. It was something like 6 bedrooms, 3 living-type rooms for 160K. It needed a roof, new driveway, there were plumbing issues, needed appliances. Another was a rambler priced at 155k 4 bed/2 bath about 1,200 sq ft… but it felt like more than that. Nasty brown carpets in the bedroom spaces and all the carpets were streched and creased in areas. It had a septic tank that was newly put in. I liked that house quite a bit, but it needed work. The other one was newer construction, but it was trashed and had no yard at 162k 3bed/2.5 bath.

The other most notable thing from the weekend was Satuday’s dinner. Everyone that said they were going to show up, did. It was a blast to see everyone again, even TGamer’s 4.5 month old. Its nice to get that group together because they’re all very familiar with one another, and they all are similar in a spectrum of Gaming Geek to Sports Fan. I fall in the middle of that spectrum. There were some future things to arrange after that night. A kayaking trip with BGem and his SO, LG and his BF. BGem is having a BBQ for his birthday next Saturday evening. There was a while where we made an attempt to meet with BGem, ETaurus every month or two. We should get back to that so we don’t feel like we’re on a social island so much.

So, that’s it. There might be some follow-up info. as the week progresses.

Good luck with the offer! We had fun looking at houses Saturday, but there are a few more we want to look at before making a final decision. Ugh, moms. Amiright? It’s interesting how moms feel like they get to decide what happens in your house. Fedja’s mom will want to use our house for storage and mine will want to move in.

Trying to find a house seems like a lot of work. I have trouble even finding suitable places for rent. But that is something I miss about Seattle. There was always something to rent. I’m glad you two were able to put an offer on something though! And then got to hang out with some buddies. Good friends, when all available, are the absolute best!

That’s so exciting that you put in an offer! I know how nervewracking that is, so at least you’ll know something by tonight hopefully. Good luck and I hope it all works out! Oh and of course you know I wanna see pictures 🙂

Good luck with all the house stuff. Sounds like such a hassle…but I know it will be worth it in the long run. It’s a great move on y’alls part.

Good luck with the offer. Thats quite a bit below asking but like you said if the comps in the area are going for less you totally have a chance. 1700 Sq is a great size. Thats were we were at with the first home that fell through…we now have an accepted contract on a house MUCH closer and in an older established neighborhood which is only 1100 sqft but really awesome.

ryn: We actually have quite a few theories about the mystery room. Cryogenics lab, body disposal, “dungeon”, hermetically sealed room full of comics books and bad movies like the Star Wars Christmas special, or a secret entrance to a bomb shelter. You know, just in case. I guess we’ll find out if we go for it lol

RYN: Its so ironic that you said that about memory triggers b/c there are quite a few, music, scents… so lately everytime Jock comes over, I spray the body spray I started wearing around the time P & I started seeing each other so that Im not associating that scent with him. I need to do the same for music & activities. I have no idea why Im like this tho. Its annoying, sad & pathetic. LOL

neat, well good luck on the house offer. i’m excited to see how things progress for you two. so many variables with owning a home. there are certainly things we’d do differently the next time, but i’m pretty happy with our house. your mom’s comment was odd, do you normally work on her car?

ryn: yes its good to hear things from your perspective since you’re newly married. 🙂 also, about the breeder…..um ya. my entire life growing up we always rescued pets and adopted them from shelters, that’s all i ever knew. D and I’s first kitty was even from a shelter, however now he’s hooked on this specific breed so i’m just going along with it. i love the animals no matter where they come from yanno?
