Holiday and You Know What

Holiday

The last time we went to see Henry Rollins, he said he doesn’t like the word we use for taking time off work: Vacation. It literally means to vacate. Logically, we aren’t vacating our positions, just taking a break. I like the English term for taking a break: Holiday. We celebrate holidays and I imagine most people celebrate being away from work.

I’m out Wednesday, but Twin isn’t so its going to be game day for me. We are leaving after she works Saturday to go down to Manzanita, OR. Its about a month earlier than usual. Twin and I pleaded our case with her parents about moving the big annual trip that Manzanita is the tradition and we should stick to that rather than going to Lake Chelan over in Eastern Washington. We were going to go ourselves, but that changed early in the process so now there’s dual trips. We’ll still be going to Lake Chelan the first or second weekend of August. It should be the second because BGem’s wedding is Aug. 4th.

We won’t be back until Thursday 07/11, which I’m really looking forward to. We have a plan to go kayaking, hiking, kayaking in our days there. The weather looks like its going to be good. There will be Munchkin games and some reading. I’m not sure if I’m going to finish my book and so I’m contemplating getting a new one.

Reading (I’m sure most of you skip this part now)

I took some notes on Friday where I read quite a few pages waiting for Twin to get home and while she watched some movies. They spent the chapter explaining the archetypes.

They’re not the only one’s to make note of generational patterns, and most of those focus on two dominant shifts: Awakening and Crisis. I’m not fond of how Strauss-Howe are idolizing "Prophet" generations which makes me question what generation they belong to and point out my own bias against Prophet generations.

My angst comes from my mom and dad and their talk of how great everything was with the movements in the 60’s and 70’s. I would argue that those who have come to power exploited everyone being de-centralized and apathetic to gain power and lead us down the road we’re on now. I also think their narcissism stays with them through all stages of life and those of us who are coming of age now see it plainly. I know that not all Baby Boomers are self-centric, but a good portion of the ones I see post comments on articles or children of them who write here seem to fit that mold.

All this talk of latchkey kids, and self-righteous youth makes me wish I had first hand experience with all of that so I could be more objective. I will move past my own bias with more information from multiple sources.
