“Food” for Thought…
so- this is random…but I was thinking about it this morning… i got done with bootcamp and wanted to eat something filling, low calorie, and with protein. So I had a weight watchers chicken soup and cut up a 3 oz. piece of chicken and put it in there. And I remember thinking- "wow, my coworkers are going to think I’m weird for eating soup for breakfast" and then thinking "but why should it matter- why is soup a "lunch" food?!" so it got me thinking…
why is it that certain foods are designated for certain meals?
Ex. Why are Eggs and cereal "breakfast", sandwhiches "lunch", and "meat and veggies" dinner?!
who was the person who designated these foods so that we stick to them for each meal. Sure- you can eat what you want at home, but if you go to a restaraunt and want eggs for dinner- you won’t find it on the menu.
I also think it’s weird because you would think that your biggest calorie meal should be lunch (after you’ve gotten your day started, and have time to burn the calories off), yet most people seem to eat the most at dinner. Is this just an American thing? My trainer tells me that the best meals to eat consist of a meat and vegetables. yet, there are not many breakfast meals that consist of this.
I guess my point is- if I want to eat soup for breakfast or waffles for dinner, I will do it. But it’s just funny that I feel weird doing it…

LOL that was random but a very good point! I’d much rather have dinner for breakfast and vice versa. I shall rebel against all food cliches, just for you! 😉 Have fun at the 10 year reunion!!!

If you were in Japan, soup for breakfast would be more normal than not. Lunch is a pretty big meal in Spain. And dinner is at like 10pm or something. Also, remember that 60% of the population being fucking huge and gravely ill due to obesity is a relatively recent phenomenon- things like “how many hours do I have to burn off these calories” just weren’t the biggest concern, b/c people didn’t eat 5,000 of them a day and have to worry about it. Of course, “calories” is a relatively recent obsession too, if you look at it in terms of history. Culture used to guide food choices, as did availability and cost and climate, and food was prepared. None of this crazy packaged shit. I don’t even think WW and Healthy Choice brand food is actually good for anyone. It’s not actual FOOD.

I know, you’re probably like, “this chick is getting all ranty again” but it’s like my THING. Nobody eats real food anymore. They eat consumer packaged goods. We’ve never been more obsessed with calories and nutrients and we’ve never been fatter or unhealthier as a country. And yet, to try and solve that problem, people obsess MORE with calories and specific nutrients, and it never occurs to anybody to simply prepare their meals from real food that grew out of the ground or walked around a field and didn’t sit crammed in a cage getting pumped full of drugs, and get their asses moving. Why should it occur to anyone? It’s only been working since the beginning of freaking time. Just my $0.02. 🙂

Have you decided what you’re wearing yet?! I eat dinner foods for breakfast all the time. I don’t really like b’fast foods–I usually eat leftovers, pasta, or soup. I’ve often wondered the same thing about why certain foods are for certain meals… BTW–totally agree with Krebiz! I (and I know you’re the same way) really try to stick to the outer perimeter of the grocery store. Good points!
