Wait, Ronald Reagan is suddenly a good President?

They’re finally burying Ronald today, hopefully bringing an end to the constant “We’ve got breaking news folks, they’re moving Reagan’s body, this is historic!” updates that have been bombarding CBS for the last few days. Seriously, do you REALLY have to update my programming to tell me that, shockingly, Ronald Reagan is still dead?

Oh, and if you believe Regan was one of the greatest Presidents of all time, well, it’s certainly understandable. That’s what the media have been feeding you for days now. However, let me set the record straight. Reagan was a racist, a homophobe, and an incredibly evil man in every way. Unless you’re a rich white guy, you probably have no reason to do anything other than hate him. However, since rich white guys are who controls what the media says, Regan is seen as a demigod.

I’m sure I’ve got lots of nasty notes awaiting after this entry, and I’m REALLY looking forward to the kind of arguments you people come up with to defend this guy. Don’t disappoint me.

Oh, but I do send out my condolences to the family of Ray Charles, one of the great performers of our time, a man that incredibly overcame complete blindness by the age of 7. He’s the guy we should be honoring.

Amen!

Amen to that! Reagan was a horrible human being. It’s like saying, right after Hitler died, “Oh, well, he was always smiling!” I think Reagan kickin the bucket got as much coverage as 9/11 or a school shooting. Who cares? One more resident in hell, I say.

Well said! Ray Charles is awesome. He reminds me of my grandfather.

well id have to say i disagree with you. Reagan made huge changes both good and bad but i do believe he was one of the greatest presidents we ever had. I mean those people who are homosexual have made there decisions. The choices we make dictate who we are. and really well i dunno, this is hard to all say in merely so few words, so i’ll just say i have to disagree.

Reagan inherited a MESS. The U.S. was in far, far, worse shape than it is now. Let’s go down the list: Double-digit interest rates. Double-digit inflation. Unemployment near 10%. Big deficits already. No growth (“Stagflation”). “Malaise”. Hostages in Iran. The Soviet Union had just invaded Afghanistan. The cold war was icy cold. Unrest at home.70% tax rates. An energy crisis. A military in …

(cont) decline and under-funded. America was in very bad shape, and getting worse. After Reagan left office, the top tax rate was 31%. Inflation and interest rates were low. The economy was expanding at a rapid pace. Unemployment was low. The back of the Soviet Union had been broken. There was no more ‘Malaise’, and people actually felt good about the U.S. again. Yes, Reagan ran up some big ..

(cont).. deficits, but part of that was because the military needed a big injection of funds, and because he lost significant revenue from ‘Bracket creep’ when tax rates and inflation came down. But by the end of his second term, the deficit was falling rapidly as a percentage of GDP as the U.S. grew out of its debt problem. This is why Reagan will be remembered as a great president. That’s …

(cont).. also why he’s hated by so many. He was a transformational figure. Like Thatcher in England, he presided over sweeping changes in the country. 100 years from now, Reagan will be remembered as one of the two or three great presidents of the 20th century.

pretty much everyone seems to agree with you, all the time. what is up with that? good thing that one person (see previous entry) dares to leave a differing viewpoint. –katie
