Job Hunting

Well, I’ve applied for 13 jobs now, but only 4 have actually got back to me and of those only 1 is potentially interested. I don’t think I’ve been doing a very good job in the application process though, which is probably why hardly anyone is responding – I really don’t know what I’m doing. I’ve only had the one job and I was recruited for it so I didn’t go through the whole application process and all that, I basically just walked right into it.

That’s actually one of the problems I’m having finding a job – most accounting firms fill their entry level positions by recruiting at universities and they usually have them filled several months in advance. Which makes it a bit more difficult for me seeing as I’m not a college student and I don’t need a job after I graduate, I need one now. On the bright side, the one firm that did express interest is located nearby and the job market here for accountants is pretty light, so I honestly think I have a great shot at getting a job there. The downside of that is that I’m not sure that I really want to stay in rural Georgia (and I was thinking that this might be a good opportunity to move elsewhere), but if it’s the only place I can get a job right now then I suppose I’ll have to take it.

But, seriously guys, any job hunting advice?

If I remember right, you just graduated recently. Your school probably has a placement agency — most of them are very helpful at matching you with places that are actively recruiting at the school. Give them a call. My other advice? Follow up on applications you made. Call them 3 or 4 days after you submit the application/resume. I got 2 jobs that I wouldn’t have otherwise just because my resume got pulled out of the pile when I called. Good luck!!

It took me three months to find a job! I suck at it.

I basically have applied for EVERYTHING…job hunting right now sucks BADLY. Pretty much.

Well, I know that persistence is key, but in the corporate world…that’s a whole ‘nother ball game for me. I think perhaps being honest about what you want is a good way to go, and can open more doors than just making stuff up can. The job market is in the shitter anyway right now, Matty. With the economy the way it is no one wants to hire anybody. Good luck.

If you want to move now, you should move now (to Michigan. To Lansing!). You probably have enough money to set yourself up and find a job. But what do I know. RYN: Actually, you haven’t gotten around to telling me about the goat dog yet. No, I’ve never talked to you in the bath, you always call at just the right time, somehow.

you need to look in metro Atlanta area. it’s such a boomtown. Find a placement agency that specializes in financial accounts. Leave yourself open to financial jobs other than accounting. Talk to your school’s placement personnel.

Job hunting was one of the most stressful, least enjoyable experiences ever for me. The market is terrible right now, but it might be better for you with your practical degree than it was for me and my English B.A. I sincerely hope you use this as an opportunity to move somewhere new. Really. Don’t limit yourself. Or, you could do what I do and get another degree if you can’t find a decent job.

well, i mean, that’s what i got about the kenya thing too with that jerome corsi guy. where did freedom of speech go? anyway, sucks on the job front. maybe if you give yourself some cleavage?… anyway, pushup bras usually do the trick for me. well, or there’s always just smiling a lot and being pretty. but… you are a guy so… that’s unlikely to work for you. sry 🙁

if you need summat shortterm and immediate, I just go and ask people, shops and cafes and bars and that, I just walk through the city asking everywhere that employs any kind of staff, you have to be a bit thickskinned, you can do that for a week nonstop without getting anything. Local papers have jobs, I ring up numbers, get interviews if I can. Jobs in papers often say “no experience required”, but you still have to blag it and sound good. We have job centres, they can usually get you summat fairly quick. Recruitment agencies are how John gets all his building work. I don’t know how you go about getting accounting jobs obviously…

you know… feel free to ignore me, but I think you need to move out of home and probably your small town area for your sanity. Go to a city you like, I think it makes more difference than any job, your living space and the kinds of people you mix with. The only reason not to is financial, and you basically know your parents will chuck money at you if you need it, so. World’s at your feet mate, you got everything, degree some money parents to come back to if you have to… just do whatever you want.

RYN: 13 days is a week too long…a week and a half too long in my personal opinion. As for job hunting…be confident…it really helps 🙂
