In the Last Two Months

So, things that have happened in the 2+ months since I’ve written here:

I’ve settled into my “new” job well enough, where I have more responsibilities and a longer commute, but also slightly more pay. Also, my boss ended up hiring two of my prior consultant co-workers, which makes me much happier than I would have been otherwise. The people you work with really makes the job.

I have settled into my new house well enough. I actually had a “house warming” party last month while Heather was visiting, which was pretty much my first attempt at throwing anything resembling a party at all. I was somewhat expectant of a complete disaster featuring my varied compilation of friends either getting into violent arguments about religion or sitting in awkward silence, but it turned out that everything went relatively smoothly. I think most everyone had fun too, but I also got very drunk and thus naturally assumed everyone was having as much fun as I was.

I also started reading a book called The Singularity is Near by Ray Kurzweil and am now contemplating the possibility that artificial intelligence smarter than humans will be controlling the world within, oh, 10 years. Granted, I’m not at all convinced, as Kurzweil’s argument to my amateur brain seems to pretty much be a “rate of growth” argument, which I think will run into another classic economic argument which is that “if something can not continue forever, then it won’t.” But, then, Ray Kurzweil also helped invent speech recognition technology and obviously is a much smarter person than me, so who am I to judge? It is interesting to know that a very intelligent person thinks that transhumanism might be possible in my lifetime anyway.

I also decided that I like Thai food and listened to a lot of Johnny Cash songs on Pandora.

Thai is good. I like most Oriental stuff. ~I’ll be

Oh, here it is. That was weird. Anyway, I’ll read this now.

Johnny Cash is cool enough. I’ve never had Thai, though. >“if something can not continue forever, then it wonÂ’t.” That’s an interesting concept, in general. Hmmm. By the way, I sort of lied to you by omitting the fact that I have another OD where I sometimes write. I didn’t tell anyone about it because I wanted to write somewhere history-free. (cont.)

I’ve been thinking about giving you access to it for awhile, so if you want, you can read it. The name is [sore throat]. I don’t write there a lot and most of it is, I don’t even know, bullshit. But feel free. I’ll add you there. Maybe you’ll write more if I do, hint hint!!

I think more has happened in your life in the past two months than you let on.

I agree with everything you said about the Chick-fil-A brouhaha. The mayors were out of line. I hope they were not serious. But, you know, ’tis the season for political posturing. I think the boycotting isn’t so much due to the personal opinions of the founder / owner, but the fact that they fund organizations that work against gay marriage, and I think boycotts are a legitimate tactic (usuallynot too effective, though, as most people are apathetic.) I also agree with you about Kurzweil. He is a very smart guy, but smart guys sometimes run off the rails, and extrapolation is risky, especially when exponential growth is involved. I think what he describes will probably eventually happen, but in 10 years? I doubt it. Davo
