Give Me Liberty or Give Me McCain
So, I voted early today, primarily to vote in the presidential election as I knew embarrassingly little about any of the local elections. As for the Presidency, as usual, I’m not too thrilled with either candidate, but since one of the candidates is overtly corrupt, I felt pretty obligated to vote for the other guy. You know, even if he is a Muslim.
While I’m on the subject of the election though, it bothers me the number of people who base who they vote for primarily on issues that aren’t going to be effected regardless of who is elected. For example, if you’re not voting for Obama because you’re afraid he’s too inexperienced, then good for you, that’s a valid enough reason, even if I disagree with it (though I hope you’re casting your vote for Bob Barr and not the party who has even less experience, at least in their VP candidate). On the other hand, if you’re not voting for Obama because he’s pro-choice, then you’re not being very logical, seeing as the issue of abortion isn’t likely to be affected at all based on who is the President. Of course, if you’re casting your vote based on an actual issue, that’s probably a significant improvement over the high percentage of people who vote based who their social circle is voting for, so, I’m not sure that I’m complaining about the right thing.
But, at any rate, I’m an optimist at heart, and I think we can all take comfort in the fact that the President probably doesn’t have as much power as we all picture him or her as having. Our society does an astoundingly good job of running itself and usually manages to overcome whatever stupid legislation government manages to pass. And even if McCain does get elected, there’s still a Democratic legislative body in place, so he isn’t going to be able to get a lot through. Actually, that’s probably the best argument for voting for McCain – by doing so you’d be voting for the candidate who will have less of an opportunity to fuck up our country through their policies. Which makes more sense than most of the reasoning I hear.
But back to my point, hey, think about it. We’ve just lived through two terms of probably the worst president in the history of the United States, a Presidency that doubtlessly has been a disaster on every level. Yet, really, how much has your life been affected by it? No matter who gets elected, even if it’s the corrupt party who manages to get elected for all the wrong reasons, it will probably most definitely be an improvement over the last 8 years. And as big of a disaster as the last 8 years were, on a personal level, most of us were only minimally hurt. So, the moral of this entry is, no matter how stupidly we vote, we usually end up all right in the end, which is comforting, if not exactly inspiring, right?

sadly enough, matt, we aren’t all right. our country is in the worse shape it’s been in since the great depression. no one around the world respects us, and political discourse in this country is so polarized, that we seem like two countries instead of one. here’s how our lives have been affected by two terms of the worst prez ever: the crushing debt he leaves the country in, the

Okay, but, I just suffered a gas crisis over the last two weeks and somehow Mr. Bush and all his groupies still had gas. You know why? Because he’s good buddies with the oil companies. If HE lived in Asheville, I bet there’d have been gas. Pain in my ass. If McCain wins and then dies, we’ll be stuck with Palin, and somehow, at that point, we might wish Bush was back… ~I’ll be

it really is an important election. there is so much going on, with what the next president is walking into, is just one big shitstorm. i voted early too, for Obama. his show of honesty (no matter how fake it may or may not be) and his want for involvement of the people in the government, and not just corporations, helps me vote with a clear conscience for him. i can say that he appeals to much ofwhat I support, issue-wise, as well. I like the way he does things. He doesn’t seem as underhanded and dirty as the other guys. Course, if Kucinich had gotten the nomination, this would be a different conversation, where i just say Kucinich is GREAT! 🙂 Later.

RYN: so you’re saying that i should be punished because other people are not responsible? do you think that by limiting my rights “we”/”they”/”you”/”whoever” are solving crime???

RYN: i, too, am complete libertarian–complete. however, let it be known that i am lowercase libertarian. also let it be known that hitler also valued gun control saying, “The most foolish mistake we could possibly make would be to permit the conquered Eastern peoples to have arms. ryn: that was cute and irrelevant. I don’t agree with Obama’s ethics; that is why I wouldn’t vote for him. Is that a good enough reason for you?

unfortunately i am very passionate about these issues. typically i’m not political, and don’t allow political things to get me riled up, but for some reason, this election has been more frustrating than ever. before you asked me about burglaries, and the likelihood of them– coming from a woman who was stepped over through her window by a burglar as a little girl, i promise, it’s likely.

but nevermind all of this. you will believe how you believe, and i will believe how i do. (which is not bad.)

honestly, life isn’t fair. inevitably there are consequences to be people’s actions. if someone murders my husband, yes, the murderer will go to jail and might be prosecuted to death, but that does not negate that i will have to deal with the mental and emotional (and probably still physical) consequences of his death. does that suck? yes. consequences suck. that’s how i feel.

thank you (for respect), and thank you (for anniversary happiness)! i made my entries private because i’m not really one to talk about politics–i never have been. but i’ve been getting so frustrated lately about all of this that i had to speak up. now i am done; it is out of my system (hopefully), and i’d rather talk about me again. haha
