Expensive
I wrote an entry on Prosebox a bit ago and it was sorta amazing how quickly the site functioned and how easily I was able to note my friends who have migrated there. But OD seems to be working tonight, so I suppose I will write here. Although I do think having the prior entry stand as the final one would have been somewhat appropriate.
Anyway, so, weddings are really expensive. Which, don’t get me wrong, I am actually really excited to have my family and Heather’s family unite in one big occasion of splendor. I’m not necessarily a huge fan of extravagant weddings, but for the two of us a relatively big wedding seems to genuinely make sense, seeing as neither of our families have even met each other. So, I’m thinking our wedding is going to be a pretty awesome thing. And we are going to have lots of friends and booze too, so it should be a hell of a party if nothing else.
That said, sometimes I find it hard to reconcile spending $15,000 on a wedding when that money could be used in so many other ways. I could take a 3 month vacation! I could save starving children! I could buy all the books I can ever read for the rest of my life! I could invest the money in index funds and retire several years earlier!
Granted, we are trying to do things as cheaply as possible, but doing things on the cheap for weddings is still apparently very expensive. Our venue and food is about $10k and the photographer is another $2k. Then there’s lots more miscellaneous costs that add up quickly – invitations, flowers, wedding dress, suit, etc. And things get even more expensive if we have more than the 100 guests we’re allotted for our $10k at the wedding site. And, hey, can’t forget to tip the wait staff!
Psh, this entry wasn’t intended to sound so negative. I actually am really excited about this wedding! Why must I always be such an accountant?
hahaha You’re such an economist! Yeah, weddings are insanely expensive. Just think of how much worse it would be if you lived in an area with a higher cost of living. Or you could be me and have your wedding reception in the same room where you ate lunch every day from 1st through 8th grade. Much smaller price tag, but I couldn’t stop thinking about lunch trays and cafeteria slop while Iwas trying to sip champagne and dance!

Yes, weddings are CRAZY expensive. When ALL was said and done we shelled out nearly 60K…Yeah, that would have been a fat down payment on a house…But it is what it is at this point. Of course the day is “priceless” and you only have one real opportunity to make it YOUR day. Try not to think it of it in terms of $ (so hard for accountants lol) but as a splurge you only get once. Enjoy it!
