A Year (and a Half) in Photos, Part Six

<— More photos that-a-way!

Halloween edition!  So, this one might seem a little random, but I was really proud of mine and Chris’s Halloween costumes this year.  While at DragonCon, I decided to take up a new hobby — sewing — mainly because I was inspired to make our costumes for the 2012 convention.  But about three weeks before Halloween, I thought, "Sewing… it can’t be that difficult.  I’m going to make my Halloween costume from scratch!"  That afternoon, I found myself at Hancock Fabrics picking out a pattern and fabric for a gypsy-ish outfit to go with my Dia de los Muertos makeup plans.  My dumb ass picked one of the most difficult patterns available, complete with a corset.

But… it turned out fucking awesome.  So, I wanted to share.

My very first homemade article of clothing.  It’s not all that impressive by itself, but considering I have never in my life cut out a pattern or used a sewing machine, I was tickled pink.

Then I started the skirt.  This is just the yoke and the first tier.  I was particularly proud of this because I had to learn to sew a gathering stitch — which I did by watching YouTube videos.  Ha… what did we do before the interwebs?  Srsly.

A couple of days later, i had a complete skirt!  I even added my own touch at the bottom with the ball fringe.

Next to last piece — the corset.  This was especially difficult because, when cut out according to the pattern and pinned together, it didn’t even kind of fit.  I’m not sure how they got the size so wrong on this, because every other piece of the costume fit like a champ.  Anyway, I was able to remedy the situation by making my own pattern and adding some additional side panels.

Trying on my costume the night I finished the corset.  There was one other piece that I sewed, a fringed shawl, that I never took pictures of before Halloween.

And here we are on Halloween!  I bought the hat, and made the flower-looking thingy with some scrap fabric from my top.  Note that I did not make Chris’s costume.  But I did do both our makeup!

I think this picture is hilarious just because we’re dressed like freaks riding the Metro.  We got lots of interesting looks that night.

Rob took this photo at the restaurant.  Ha… I just noticed that Chris’s mustache is crooked in this one.  He kept taking it off so he could eat.
