I Know Why the Caged Bird Sings

A caged bird who knows nothing of freedom has no reason to desire for it.

No matter how cold and lonely the place it grows up in is, a caged bird that knows nothing of the outside believes that its cage is all there is to the world.

No matter how much of their fate and future is decided by others, a caged bird simply looks on and sings.

The metal wire becomes a comfort and the small space is all that it has to stretch its wings. With its small, comfortable life, the caged bird does not think of the outside world.

Until it flies away.

The caged bird escapes and stretches its wings against the vastness of the open air, savoring the wonderful feel of freedom. Never has it known such a wonderful feeling. To be unrestrained by those around it and by its cage.

The caged bird finally knows freedom.

However, those who worked so hard to keep the caged bird caged will not let it escape so easily.

I realized I was the bird in the cage…only after I flew away.

But they shot me down and once again, I sing in my caged world with my wounded wings. They told me, "You brought this upon yourself…by trying to escape from your cage." So now I wait for the opportunity to escape to come once again or for someone to come and say, "Want me to set you free…from your cage?"

I will sing, I will fight, and I will wait because one day, I will know freedom once again.

I am the caged bird.
