I hope I know What I’m Doing – The Transition of a Career

Back in August 2024 I made a big transition to my career.
For the past 20-ish years I’ve been a computer programmer, which spanned several programming languages, my favorite being C#. However, the company that I work for started transitioning to a new ERP software system last year that our entire company operates on.
When I was hired by my current company, I was hired to create software systems that expanded the capabilities of the legacy ERP system’s short comings, and I did a good job of it if I say so myself. Now that we are moving away from that system and to a newer system that doesn’t require a programmer, I’ve transitioned into analytics and data warehousing. My new title? “Data Warehouse BI ‑ Analytics Manager”
I’m sure you’re wondering why I didn’t just start job hunting if I wanted to still be a programmer. The answer is two-fold; I love the company that I work for and the people that I work with. If all goes well, I’ll retire from this company when the time comes. The downside is that the pay ceiling is a bit lower than that of a software developer. The upside is though my title has changed, I’m still a programmer. If I need to whip out that sword to lay waste to the weeds in my career, I still have that ready to go.
There’s absolutely something to be said about remaining with a company that works for you. A good organization really does affect quality of life. I hope you find yourself loving this new role
