anything to get your wings

i.
wendy moira angela darling, she said,
and what a mouthful for a boy of three syllables.
a four-letter word, kiss, was all he had to give in return.

ii.
wendy was world-weary
and peter knew nothing of this world;
how could she resist him,all naïveté andguileless charm andchildlike innocence,
someone born of a world she could never belong to?

iii.
peter wanted wendy and
wendy wanted peter but
peter was never what wendy needed
when wendy needed it.

iv.
somedays, wendy stayed up late by her window
watching the second star to the right,
wondering how far it was ’til morning;
she would’ve flown the distance
but she couldn’t fly without peter’s laughter
and he only laughed for himself.

v.
wendy grew tired of childish games
but peter had nothing more to give her.
a kiss was never more than a kiss
and love was never more than a word to make her stay.

vi.
wendy wanted more but wendy
never learned to demand it;
she never learned to say no,
only forgot how to say yes.
