Holy BSG!
So I sat down at 10pm Friday with my mom, bag of Nuts to You popcorn on my lap and a bottle of water in my hand, lights off, feet on the coffee table, sweet glow of the flat-screen TV filtering through my glasses, ready to experience an hour of television many months in the waiting. BSG, Season 4, episode 1: Was it everything I hoped it would be?
Hell yes!
(except, according to the guide function on my cable TV, it was supposed to be a half hour longer–whassup with that?)

What Rocked:
Starbuck being Starbuck:
When she begins to question her identity, and Anders gives his pledge of unconditional love, she says, "You’re a better person than me. If I found out you were a Cylon, I’d put a bullet between your eyes."
Priceless.
Then her grand (but as always ill-advised) one woman assualt to speak to President Roslin.
One thing I’m sure of, Starbuck’s not a Cylon. Can’t wait to see this arc pay off though.
Baltar getting rid of the beard:
Thank the one true God! I was rather annoyed to see him coming in sporting Jesus sheek (it’s so overdone), so it’s awesome that when he gets closer to faith and self sacrifice, the facial hair leaves. I also in general love his reaction to the cult (whackos), to the woman who comes onto him, and headSix’s reaction to all of the above. Especially her visible long suffering looks of annoyance.
It’s also kind of cool to see how Baltar, in these moments where he isn’t in direct fear for his life (and thus as selfish as humanly possible), actually thinks about things and feels guilt.
Roslin consulting prisonSix about her visions.
Personally, I’d like to think Roslin was a Cylon, except she’s in the "last supper" style picture that Ron Moore said features no Cylons in it. Shame though. She’s got the personality for it.
The first scene where Tigh imagines shooting Adama in the head: I swear, it’s a testement to the gutsyness of this series that I really did believe it for a moment. I also like that Tigh is so determined to remain who he is no matter what he is.
Anders turning the Cylon Fleet around: What I love about this is that we aren’t sure whether it’s his programming that does this (as a part of the Cylon plan), or the part of him that wants to be human overcoming his programming. Sweet!
Note: It’s interesting to me that none of the Final 4 Cylons are citing Athena as an example of a Cylon that has managed to choose humanity. Not that I expect them to talk to her about it, but her very presence should provide some feeling that they can overcome their programming. I wonder if this is a sign that they are still puppets of said programming?
Judging from this episode alone, the final season BSG ride is going to be incredible! Of course, we already knew that.
In short, this episode did a fine job of getting the ball rolling on the season. And I’m really thrilled I don’t have to wait another year to find out what happens next.
