Valentine’s Day

Valentine’s Day is a holiday that I’ve never cared for. Pink decorations, hearts, chubby cherubs, cards, chocolates, love-dovey movies – I can’t stand it all! To make matters worse, when you’re a guy it’s almost always a totally flustercluck.

If you’re single, you’ll probably sit at home feeling lonely and wondering if you should head out to the bar for a drink. But then you have to wonder, will I look like some sort of desperate lonely guy trying to get lucky at the bar because he has nowhere else to go on Valentines day? And if you do meet someone, are they just desperate as well?

If you’re not single, then it’s a whole other story. Some girls will say they don’t like the holiday and not to get them anything, but then they’ll show up with a present for you anyway. Others will try to plan something and enjoy it, but then there’s pressure to make something fun and creative out of the ‘big day.’ Eh, I know it doesn’t always have to be so complicated, but it just drives me crazy.

This year, I was in a sort of annoying in between. Emily is down at college park with lot’s of work and a case of ADHD. After two and a half weeks of not seeing her, it feels like she just doesn’t care enough about me to see me. But then again, maybe I’m just over analyzing things. I didn’t try anything crazy, but if I had driven down there to give her some flowers, wouldn’t she have enjoyed it?

I don’t know! The weekend before I really wanted to see her, but she just couldn’t make time for me. She had stuff to do for her mom’s birthday, she said, and would be busy with then. But at the last minute on Saturday she IMed me after work to invite me to a concert she was going to with her mom. It was tempting, but the tickets were about $25 dollars and I had spent the entire week trying not to eat out to save money. The concert would basically cancel the whole thing out. Plus, it would be sort of weird hanging out with she and her mom on her birthday.

So that was weird, but I said we should hang out afterwards. She was sort of non-comittal, so in the meantime I went to see Chronicle with Scott. It was cool, and afterward I saw the she had texted me “What’s up?” “Oh hey,” I said, “should I come over?”

“Fus Ro Da!” she replied, using Skyrim speak.
“Is that a yes?”

I had no idea, but I was in the neighborhood so I drove by her place and called no. No answer. Quite annoying! So just a day or two before V-Day I got left hanging, sitting outside her house and feeling kinda bad. Then, the next day, she kept telling me she didn’t have time to hang out, but IMed me all morning and killed time anyway. It was totally annoying and made me sad again. The whole thing is such an emotional drain.
