Are Geese Right-Handed?
While waiting for the train yesterday I noticed two things.
First, there were streaks of color in the sky. The sun is rising early enough these days that I’m not still waiting in the dark. I’m not a big fan of summer, but I wouldn’t mind more hours of sunlight in the winter. But, I guess it’s those extra hours of sunlight that turn winter into summer.
Second, two flights of geese passed overhead, heading north. Both sets of geese were in the stereotypical vee formation, with a lead goose and geese flying off a wingtip with another goose flying of their wingtip and so on and so on. But in both cases, while there were 3-4 geese making up the right side of the formation, there were significantly more geese on the left side, like 10-15 geese on the left versus the 3-4 on the right. That made me wonder if geese prefer a “wingman” on their right because they are primarily right handed/winged. The other thing I wondered is how the geese, or at least the lead goose, decide how high to fly. Is the right height when trees appear to be a certain size or when the temperature drops to a certain level? If geese fly lower in cold weather, that might answer that question.
Other than that, I’ve got nothing.
