Update w/response
I just happened to post my "Out of the mouth of babes" post at another journal I frequent and received this as an internal email message. I couldn’t believe what I was reading. Maybe I should’ve just ignored the message but something inside said "no answer it". It’s really not worth mentioning the other journal -don’t want to start a flame war with this person.
(Buddy from other journal site)
"Why can’t they marry in Church, Church is the house of God, and God in both Old and New Testament regards homosexuality as an abomination, and a sin against nature, so yes those following the teachings of Jesus are dead set against it. Not because they are different, but are leading totally immoral lifestyles! They are not against the person! they are against the sin!! To have homosexual leanings is not wrong, it is in acting on that is where it’s wrong! It is really not an "alternative lifestyle" the world view…it is sin…the God view! Name changes does not change the poison within! Abortion becomes Pro choice…Mentally Retarded becomes mentally challenged, Dern!!! I had a list of about 15 of these and can’t find it!! but you get the picture! I only wish you had taken the moral high ground. We are not to hate the sinner…just hate the sin! a world of difference!"
My response:
I’m not trying to start an argument. I was trying to tell my daughter who is 9.5 that there was nothing wrong if someone same sex or heterosexual wishes to marry, etc… it takes all kinds in this world. For example there were a few kids in her class last year who’s family life was different then everyone else’s and when a few of them asked questions like "why are people thinking these kids (the classmates) are strange because their families are different" people would verbally shove them aside.
I’m not saying your pov or my neighbours or the politician who’s trying to grab “our” vote all has to be the same or even wrong for that matter. I’m not saying that all people who disregard same sex unions as freaks or bashers, etc… far from it.
I’m trying to teach my children tolerance for all peoples regardless their race, creed, sexual orientation, etc.. because there is far too much hate in the world today. I’ve had to explain times why of the bodies (at least 8 times out of 66) my husband’s friends/co-workers who had served overseas (in Afghanistan) trying to bring stability to a war-torn country so other little girls can go to school come home in a box.
I’ll ask you the same question I asked my grandmother who is a Roman Catholic when she grilled me why I didn’t convert to Catholicism (I happen to be C of E – though I declare myself non-denominational) and don’t go to her church; "Aren’t we all supposed to God’s children? Or is that only for the chosen few?"
I was always taught that one doesn’t have to be in a building to worship/believe. After all, Jesus preached in the open to the masses and not in a building and accepted all that were in his presence.
(NB: this is not to alienate anyone whether they practice a faith/religion or not)
I don’t practice a religion, but you said it right and you said it beautifully. This world is nothing without respect and understanding towards others. It’s the lack of those things that creates hate. I don’t get why it’s such a hard concept for others.
