how is it even possible….
…to fracture your ankle with a book??!!?? Well, okay, I doubt it’s technically fractured, but it sure does hurt. And it’s not like this was a volume of, say, Proust, that’s 1000 pages long and the size of a VW. This was a teeny little hardback that weighs about three ounces. It came flying off the table and hit me right on the anklebone. A big purple lump appeared immediately, and it hurts. Even after holding ice on it. It seems like far too major an injury for the size of the book. Kind of like picking up a piece of paper the wrong way and cutting your hand off.
I also got hit in the back of the head by an enormous crow the other day. That came swooping down from the sky at me with no provocation. Similar to the book attack. Although the crow didn’t hurt, surprisingly. It was just very shocking. And I’m starting to wonder what is going to come flying out of nowhere and whack me next.
Well, until I became crippled by a teeny little book, I was having a very nice day. Of course it’s nearly two in the morning now, so I need to bring my nice day to a close, but naturally I’m not sleepy. After I got the car back (and forked over more money than I was expecting so I hope that’s it for car problems) I decided to go to Mast Store. Mast Store is lots of fun, and there seems to be about a million of them now, but I went to the original:
I didn’t take this picture – I just found it through the wonders of Google. Every time I want to take a picture of it, there are ten zillion cars parked there in front which kind of ruins the ambiance. Anyhow, it’s really a fun store. And although I wasn’t planning on buying anything, I found the perfect bag for carrying the camera when we go to Charleston next week:
It holds the camera, the zoom lens, and all my odds and ends, and is compact and light. So hopefully it won’t make my shoulder ache too much. The camera came with a really nice actual camera bag, but it weighs a ton. And although being a bag junkie, I have a zillion bags of every imaginable kind, I didn’t have anything that would comfortably hold the camera and the zoom lens. So I was VERY pleased to find this. And it’s got all sorts of little pockets. I love little pockets.
But that wasn’t all! I also bought!
I’ve been yearning for some fun sandals – and best of all, they were half price. And they are REALLY comfortable. I’ve been admiring all the cool funky Indigo shoes that Mast carries – then discovered today that Clarks makes them. No wonder they’re so comfortable.
Well, I really need take my fractured ankle and go to bed. I’m heading to Asheville in the morning to visit the parents. I’ve been cooking like mad tonight, making cookies for my father as a thanks for putting the stove in for us. Cooking Light cookies, even better. Not so good is the amount of cookie dough I sampled while making them. Ewwwww. I’m out of the cookie-eating-habit, so it didn’t take much to make me go ewwwwww. But that’s a good thing.
be careful

Hope your ankle is non-swollen and non-hurting by sunrise. Great bag – Dad would be intrigued. Love the shoes. Clarks are the best. I have NC-itis and feel an odd homesickness for the Mast Store. That’s silly since I’ve never lived there. But it’s how I feel. I want to take my little ones there to look through the toy bins. Boo hoo. Enjoy your parents – they’re even better than Clarks.

nice sandals. It’s wiked scary to get attacked by a bird, isn’t it? I hope you know what to do with the ankle if you’re not going to the doctor. It sounds pretty bad. Be well.

Oooh cool bag! My B-I-L has like six bags at this point, always trying to find the perfect fit for the camera bodies and lens. It has become a small obsession that we tease him about but the equipment is heavy and awkward. Those are very cool sandals, very now! Hope the trip home is somewhat enjoyable.

A whack directly on bone, where there is not much padding can be very painful. Your crow incident makes me think of The Birds.

hi, I hope your ankle is feeling better! I too get swooped on by birds on occasion. My mom says there must be a nest nearby that they’re protecting. btw – LOVE the pic for your profile – is that digital?

That old, red, gravity-feed gasoline pump would be a goner out here. They’ve gotten to be quite collectable. I’m surprised that the Chinese haven’t started mass-producing them. They are the biggest manufacturer of coal-fired steam engines in the known universe. In the late 1960s they stole the plans for the 1948 Ford coupe and began building them.

The original Mast store is my favorite place to go, although the one in town has awesome sterling silver goodies. I love it when they have a good sale; otherwise I could not afford anything besides their barrel candies!

OMG, I swear I had a pair of sandals like that in college. That is no store – it is a time machine! Too cool. I hope you’ve not been swooped upon by anything else – animate or inanimate!

Ouch on the book with the ankle! I hate birds getting too close to my head. I would feel like I was stuck in that Hitchcock film about birds. We don’t have stores that look like that here. I’d want to go to it because of the outside.

The crow thing sounds like a scene from “The Birds”. We’ve been in that Mast store several times and it is the best of all of them.

i’ve been dive bomb by birds a few times. i’m just glad elephants don’t fly! ryn: i saw the movie years ago. the title is a wonderful metaphor. i wonder if continuing to learn new things as we age is one of the keys to preventing dementia. my dad was learning new things, like japanese in his 70’s, and so on. he was sharp to the end. mom stopped learning anything new years ago. careful with that ankle.

Oh my god, I’d have screamed and fainted dead away if a CROW swooped down and hit me in the head!!! I am NOT a bird lover and they actually terrify me and I’d have suspected the crow of an agenda, frankly. Hope your ankle is better.

Love the camera bag, love the sandals! Maybe you burst a blood vessel with the book? Hope it feels better soon!
