distractions

I’m in my usual "want-to-write-an-entry-but-have-nothing-whatsoever-to-say mood, and my internet connection is being really annoying and kicking me off every five seconds (and no, it’s NOT because I REALLY should be outside enjoying the terribly pleasant weather we’re having, it IS NOT). So I’m going to do that iPod thing that’s going around. Of course I saved the exact instructions on my work computer, and I’m now on my home computer so I’m recreating them from my faulty memory, but it’s SOMETHING like "hit shuffle/write the first couple of lines from the first ten songs, and everybody guess what they are!!"

Oh, come ON – it will be FUN!!!

But first – you need to check out Betty Bowers take on our administration’s reponse to Katrina. She’s America’s Best Christian, and she’s hysterical.

Okay. I cheated a bit and skipped anything that was really obvious – like the title was the first line of the song – but here ya go. Have at it:

1)  Mom got drunk and Dad got drunk
At our Christmas party
We were drinking champagne punch and homemade eggnog
Little sister brought her new boyfriend
He was a Mexican
We didn’t know what to think of him till he sang Feliz Navidad
Feliz Navidad…
(a hint – NOT the Dixie Chicks. They stole it and it’s nowhere near as funny when they do it.)

2) Let it slide
Overhead
When I believe in you
My soul can rest

But as love
It’s really love
It never fails
But fail it does

3) Crestfallen sidekick in an old café
Never slept with a dream before it had to go away
There’s a bell in the tower, Uncle Ray bought a round
Don’t worry about the army in the cold cold ground..

4-a) Waiting for the phone to ring
Diamond necklace on my shoulder
Waiting for the phone to ring
Lipstick on my neck and shoulder (not the actual person who did it orginally, but either way it’s kind of obscure, so I’ll take either)

4-b) Come on, come on
You think you drive me crazy
Come on, come on
You and whose army?

5)  Picture yourself in a boat on a river,
With tangerine trees and marmalade skies
Somebody calls you, you answer quite slowly,
A girl with kaleidoscope eyes.Cellophane flowers of yellow and green,
Towering over your head.
Look for the girl with the sun in her eyes,
And she’s gone.
(Not the obvious answer, but probably the second-most-obvious one)

6) That’s great, it starts with an earthquake, birds and snakes, an aeroplane –
Lenny Bruce is not afraid. Eye of a hurricane, listen to yourself churn –
world serves its own needs, don’t misserve your own needs. Feed it up a knock,
speed, grunt no, strength no. Ladder structure clatter with fear of height,
down height. Wire in a fire, represent the seven games in a government for
hire and a combat site.

(I had to look the lyrics up so who knows if this is right – certainly not what I thought they were saying, but WHATEVER.)

7) If I only could deceive you
Forgetting the game
Every time I try to leave you
You laugh just the same

‘Cause my wheels never touch the road
And the jumble of lies we told
Just returns to my back to weigh me down…

8)  Don’t let me hear you say life’s taking you nowhere
Angel
Look at that sky, life’s begun
Nights are warm and the days are young

9) Outside another yellow moon
Has punched a hole in the nighttime, yes
I climb through the window and down to the street
I’m shining like a new dime
The downtown trains are full
of all those Brooklyn girls
They try so hard to break out of their little worlds
(this is most emphatically NOT Rod Stewart)

10) Two jumps in a week, I bet you think that’s pretty clever don’t you boy.
Flying on your motorcycle, watching all the ground beneath you drop.
You’d kill yourself for recognition; kill yourself to never ever stop.
You broke another mirror; you’re turning into something you are not.

See? I TOLD you it would be fun. Now I have to go – the Screaming Banshee Kids are home from wherever they went earlier today, and I need to go do something.

Oh – oops. I have somehow managed to get 2 #4’s. We’ll call them A and B.

Edited to note that every time I turn on WYSIWYG so links and stuff will be easier, I forget how irritating it is for line breaks. I’ve tried to put plenty of space between these about ten times now, and you know what?? I give up!!!!! Stupid WYSIWYG.

Oh, I know what #3 is!!!!!!!!

September 4, 2005

PLEASE tell me #5 is not William Shatner. Please.

September 4, 2005

I am pathetic. I don’t know any.

September 4, 2005

OMG, I cannot stop laughing while reading Betty Bowers! She is hilarious.

Can I cheat and cross reference back to your favorite songs of the moment list? Ms. Katz just found out that 1,000 people are coming here! How bizarre is that? In a way it is good because one will be able to offer practical assistance but aren’t we like 3,000 miles away?

September 4, 2005

Betty Bowers is funny.

September 4, 2005

I think I know #5, but you threw me with “Not the obvious answer ….” I am guessing it is the Beatles song, Lucy in the Sky.

September 4, 2005

I think the only one I know is 5 too. Betty Bowers is awesome.

Thanks for letting me know you received the post card! The people around here just got theirs a few days ago. Seems like you have had some rather genuine distractions lately that might explain the mail lapse situation. 🙂

I only know one of these – No.5. Beatles?

I’m whizzing through OD quickly so no time for head scratching ….but Lucy in the Sky with Diamonds and REM’s It’s the End of the World as we know it ( and I feel fine) are in the middle there….
