I keep swearing I’m going to start writing regularly. Instead of once a month or so. Then OD goes down and I can blame it for awhile. But now I have no excuse and I am at work and not at all busy. And I can always count on Currents to make a long-overdue entry easier.
Current annoyance: And also current biggest reason I’m writing in OD instead of digging up something work-related to do – and current excuse for any weird mistakes I may make while trying to type this entry — I can’t see a damned thing!!! Well, that’s an exaggeration, but I am having some serious difficulty seeing my computer screen. Because I am wearing my glasses which are only a year old so my prescription should be fine but whatever, it is NOT, so I actually DID go week before last and get an eye exam and ordered new glasses. Which should have been here by now but apparently there is a problem and they arrived with scratches on the lens and had to be sent back and maybe they’ll be here by Friday! This ordinarily would not be all that annoying since I only wear my glasses at night, but….
Current Alarming Situation: After taking a shower this morning and putting in my contacts, I sat down at my makeup mirror and reached for my makeup and then actually saw my eyes in the makeup mirror and said shrieked, "OMG WHAT IN THE HELL??!!!???"
My eyes looked like I had been on a three-week-long crying jag. They were bright bright red; kind of like vampire eyes actually. Which was just completely bizarre, since I didn’t notice a thing amiss when I put my contacts in (and yeah, I’m not exactly at the top of the Alert Spectrum in the morning, but this is seriously not something you could not notice when putting in your contacts), and they felt perfectly normal — no itching, no burning, no…anything. I just had these bright red crying-jag eyes for no apparent reason. I am the Queen of Allergic Reactions (and my eyes routinely looked like this when I was a kid, during allergy season especially) but I wasn’t sneezing or sniffling and had no other symptoms and my contact solution is what I always use and I am not using anything different on my face or hands or anything, so… WTF????
I of course took my contacts back out very quickly, and they got no better – in fact by the time I was at work they were itching a little and were a little bit teary. Miss Artsy said she certainly hoped I didn’t have pink eye. Yikes!!! I immediately called my eye doctor. Who worked me right in.
And the answer is…. who knows!!!! It’s not pink eye, it’s not any kind of infection, my eyes look perfectly fine other than being bright red and somewhat swollen and obviously irritated. So the verdict is that it’s an allergic reaction, but what the hell I’m having an allergic reaction to is anybody’s guess. We had our office Christmas open house yesterday and we were moving stuff and kicking up dust, but it’s weird for me that a dust reaction wouldn’t include sneezing. I guess it could be something I ate, although I’ve never had this kind of reaction to food. I have skin issues if I’m allergic to food! I know my usual allergic reactions, and eyes like this are always accompanied by serious sneezing fits.
The eye doctor gave me some steroid eyedrops since I am …hahahahhaha!!… allergic to all the good drugs that might help. The eyedrops actually did help and now my eyes are just a little itchy and are not nearly so red. Which is quite a relief since it is no fun being at work and having everyone think you’ve been weeping inconsolably all day. I have to use them for three days and can’t wear my contacts for a week, so my new glasses REALLY REALLY need to show up so I can see what the hell I’m doing. At home I can just take off my glasses and shove whatever I’m reading up against my nose, but that doesn’t work so well with my work computer. I can’t type with my nose 2 inches from the monitor.
SIGH.
Current anticipation: Baker B, the Best Son Ever, is going down to his mom’s tonight. Without me!! Yippie!!!! I am getting out of it because I went with him last week when we decorated her Christmas tree, and that was right after going up to Virginia by myself for Cousin E’s aunt’s funeral. Since he didn’t go up there with me, I get a pass on a MIL visit. Also I have an allergic reaction!! So I get a night mostly to myself – maybe entirely to myself; he may spend the night down there. Which means I get to spend an evening watching whatever the hell I please and making something fun for dinner!! I have no idea what is going to be fun for dinner, but it will involve banging things around in the kitchen without Baker B being annoyed at all the noise. Our kitchen is unfortunately not separated from the rest of the living area so whoever is making noise in the kitchen is irritating to whoever is in the living area trying to watch TV or read or use the computer or whatever. So an evening to make noise in the kitchen is always fun.
And I can watch whatever I want on the New TV – like House, which I am trying to finish off, and Vera, my current thing I’m watching that Baker B isn’t interested in.
OH: Current TV: House. And Vera. I’ve only recently run across Vera, which I can stream for free with Amazon Prime. It’s something Baker B doesn’t care anything about — slow moving crime drama that is not at all funny- kind of like The Killing, actually. He also doesn’t care for House, despite loooooving Hugh Laurie, because it is, ewwwww!!! all medically and stuff. Which I don’t like either – I have to avert my eyes during the icky medically stuff – but I love the story lines. Although I have to say, now that I’m on the second disc of the last season, I’m going to be glad when it’s over. It’s gotten kind of depressing, in that House is always House and will never ever change, and after all this time not changing ever starts to get a little overwhelmingly grim. And I don’t want him to totally change… just to change enough so you feel like there is a little hope for him.
Now that we’re finally experiencing the wonder of streaming on the new TV, we have been watching a lot of QI via YouTube- you can’t get it on disc here. It’s a British "quiz show" hosted by Stephen Fry, with a panel of comedians who try to answer obscure questions. Very amusingly. It is hysterical. We’ve also JUST realized that we can watch The Green Screen on YouTube. The Green Screen was on for a couple of seasons years ago – 2004 and 2005- right after the American version of Whose Line is it Anyway went off the air. It is very similar to Whose Line, in that Drew Carey hosted it and there were a lot of the same people on it — Greg Proops, Colin Mochrie and Brad Sherwood were in every episode, happily. It’s comedy improv like Whose Line, but is done in front of a green screen and then afterwards the background is animated. Hard to explain but very very funny. Oddly there are a bunch of clips on YouTube, but the only full episodes appear to be from Polish television. And are in English, with Polish (I think) subtitles. Well here, here’s a clip (not from Polish TV) if I can get it to post:
Okay, I don’t think that posted, and I don’t have time to figure out why it’s not working (YouTube is suddenly all … different.. and I don’t see where you grab the "old" embed code like you used to be able to do) so just go here:
Well, that is enough entry for one day. Maybe if I’d save a few things I’d be able to write more often. Hahahahahaha!!
Oh and I did discover there is an Infinite Monkey Cage podcast with Stephen Fry not so long ago. I haven’t listened to it yet.

Oh sorry about your eyes. That must be crazy making. I do hope if it is an allergic reaction is it one of those that passes overnight. I’d drink lots of water if it were me. Just in case it was something that could get washed out of one’s system. Yippee for a night at home alone with the cats and noisy things in the kitchen. That is cool how they use the green screen. My first yoga class really hurt. It was about a gazillion years ago. (well 30). I haven’t been able to figure out how to embed videos anymore either. Oh well. I’ll have to try Vera. I think I’d like it.

That’s really strange about your eyes. I get seriously bloodshot eyes every now and then for no apparent reason, but there’s always some sensation from it, like stinging or scratchiness. I just chalk it up to allergies. Hope you feel better soon.

I love evenings where I can cook whatever I want for dinner. The only problem is, nothing good or useful gets cooked and I end up with scrambled eggs or something equally boring… Take care,

Sorry to hear about the eyes. That sounds spectacularly alarming. We have a lot of trouble with our eyes in hayfever season, which is kind of abating now. I do find that as I get older, my specs don’t seem to last as long. My vision changes dramatically for the worse. Optometrists annoy me as they don’t seem to be able to do much for aging eyes. They seem to be all about selling masses of fashionable frames. Thank you for the tip about The Green Screen. I’ll look on youtube. I’m like you and love to have the house completely to myself for a while. Enjoy it!

So you’re allergic to the drugs that would likely relieve allergies. That is sick. I hope your eyes clear up soon. My eyes get irritated during ragweed season and sometimes around cigarettes. I know that dryness can make you want to pull your eyeballs out of their sockets, snip the optic nerve and just throw them away. Here’s hoping you don’t have to resort to that.

I’m putting off the glasses till January in favor of a battery for the car. It’s possible there is something strange in the air there that you just never reacted to before, I think. I keep hiving like crazy since we moved here. I’ve been trying to watch Downtown Abby, but it isn’t grabbing me. I hope your alone time was nice and you have a good weekend.

I love it when you talk about the TV progs cos I know your taste is similar to mine and I’m so out of date with what’s on these days because I don’t spend much time in the sitting room where the TV is. Haven’t seen QI for ages and I used to watch that all the time.
