Fate strikes again…

So 18 years ago, I quit a job I had had for almost 5 years in order to pursue a new field.  First time I quit a job without one lined up.  I cashed out my 401k and was living on that.  About the time it was going to run out…BOOM got a job.

I won’t lie, I was getting worried after I didn’t get the job that I considered a sure thing.  But along comes someone I know quitting their job with no notice and leaving a spot that I am the only person in the city that knows 90% of what he did with no training needed.  I helped them out teaching a class this week…told them I might be interested.  Then told them that I was definitely interested.  Get the call today saying they want to make me an offer and asking if I can come in tomorrow to discuss….ummm yeah.  So 10am tomorrow I find out what that job is (since they restructured duties once the one person quit) and find out what they want to pay me.  I really am not in a position to negotiate much other than I have the skills they desperately need…I need to learn to be more confident and aggressive in the job market.  I charged them a certain amount to teach a class…that in theory was scheduled to last 6 hours but they said I could shorten it if I wanted because they were thinking that was too much time (and I agreed).  When asked how I came up with that amount, I told them that is what I would make if I was sitting at home working.  They asked if that is what I would have made, and I said yes…about…..which honestly wasn’t a total lie.  It was a little more but not much…so they know about what I was making…lets see if they want to match it.

Anyway…the stress has been released.  I am thinking they will want me to start Monday, which means 0 days between jobs 😀 The universe is being nice to me….scares me a little…just sayin……

My advice is go 50% above what you make now and meet them in the middle. A 25% increase on income is always nice. Worse case scenario you can always counter.

Also, if you don’t need benefits bump your pay up more. I did that for the job I am in now. I argued that I would save them money by not having to pay their portion of an insurance plan and it worked. I was offered 20% more per hour and it has been great so far.

Best of luck! You’ll be in my thoughts tomorrow !
