Well that sucks and Christmas cards + edit

I got a fat envelope from the IRS yesterday.  I thought they only sent stuff out once a year. Never even felt a twinge of worry…then I opened it…and wanted to vomit.  Apparently I was randomly selected to be audited.  Of course.  That makes sense.  Audit the single, poor school teacher… not the wealthy buisness people who hide their money, or the welfare lumps who get back more in taxes than I make in a year.  Anyway, I went to a workshop 3 years ago.  They paid us in two lump sums.  I got the last one in January of last year.  They either didn’t send, or I didn’t get a W2 from them.  I forgot about it.  Yes, it was my responsibility, yes I made the money, yes, at the time I knew I had to pay taxes on it.  Anyway, it was a bill for $199 and all sorts of threats about what will happen if I don’t pay it.  What the crap.  I personally know 3 people who owe over $10,000 to the IRS and they’ve paid nothing and nothing has happened to them.  Anyway, I got online and paid it immediately…Merry Christmas to me I guess. 🙁  Now I have to go back and file an amended Louisiana tax and pay them.  🙁 🙁 🙁

Edit: I guess I should clarify what I mean.  I am not complaining about paying the taxes on the check.  It was from a grant, so they didn’t take taxes out.  I knew I would have to pay on it.  It was an honest mistake that I didn’t pay them.  I didn’t get a W-2 on them and it was over a year later when I filed my taxes.  (I got the check in January 2012 and filed the taxes in Feb of 2013.) My complaints were the fact that I was audited, it just irritates me, and the threats they had in the letter.  I had no idea I had made the mistake.  This is the first contact I’ve had from them.  I would assume they would first send out a simple notice and give you the chance to pay before instantly threatening jail time when I owe $199.  As I said, I know people who owe thousands and have for years.  They’ve never had an issue.  Apparently my $199 is more important.

Anyway, putting that aside, having a beautiful, but COLD day.  We actually had a little sleet earlier, but it didn’t last long.  I love the cold!  Ok, you yankees, I know a couple of days in the 30s/40s don’t seem like winter to you, but they do down here! lol

Went up to school to work this morning.  Monday we have all the big bosses coming through.  They’ll stay in our school from around 7 to after the kids leave.  They’ll visit every classroom.  So, company’s coming, it’s time to clean everything up, sweet the cat hair under the rug….wait, that’s just here. Ha!  Nah, did some cleaning, and got everything ready.  Not doing a dog and pony show, just doing what I would normally do.  They’ll like it or they won’t.  Now I’m off to clean house, write out Christmas cards, and wrap presents.  On that note…

I would love to send Christmas greetings out to you all.  I have addresses for several of you, but if you would like a card from me, leave your address in a private note.  I promise, I’m semi-normal and won’t show up at your door with a hatchet.  Shoot, I haven’t done that in years! 😀

This one is so wrong, but so funny:

Ryn: Something very similar happened to my friend last August! I have heard from a few people that the IRS is really cracking down and inspecting people at a closer glance. Its done randomly I think. Although I am sure they would have aught yours and my friends extra income anyway.

I find it “funny” that the IRS throws a fit when you owe them money (even a small amount) but when they owe you money, it takes FOREVER. My husband and I are waiting for our adoption tax credit that we filed an amended tax return for in APRIL. And now, it seems that we will probably get our 2013 taxes back before we get our money from 2012. GRR.

What a bummer – it’s a sore point in this family too. We pay our taxes faithfully but if there is a tiny mistake on our part, we get picked on. Yet one of Stephen’s family members has been cheating the tax system fir years and gets away with it all the time. The UK tax bods even audited Stephen after we moved to the US and he ended up owing them a whole nine pounds. It cost them and us more in postal charges to sort it out than they made but they got their pound of flesh.

Nothing coming from the IRS is fun…and I’m glad your letter was only for that amount and could be taken care of so quickly. So many people end up with a nightmare when a letter arrives…. :/

Random reader/noter. Woke up way too early today. Hope you don’t mind if I browse around. Can’t complain about a clever cat who has us owners wrapped around their four paws. 🙂
