Questions for Christianity

Here’s the thing, and I’m confused.

Most Christians I’ve encountered believe that their God is the one true God because the Bible tells them so, and the Bible is the divine word of God, which is timeless and infallible and unchanging. Right?

If that’s true then:

The Bible not only condones, but gives actual laws on how to properly own and beat your slaves. God says slavery is okay. I don’t know any Christians today that think that slavery is okay. Therefore, there are 3 possibilities.

1) God was wrong. And if God was wrong, then he’s not perfect and all-knowing and timeless. And if God is wrong, then God is not God.
2) The Bible is wrong, in which case, it is not the timeless, infallible word of God, in which case you have no basis for your belief in THIS God, which means your faith is based on nothing
3) Christians for 1400 years misinterpreted the Bible, and THEY were wrong. In which case, why didn’t this God issue a Bible version 2.0 to clarify the position that all of his followers were incorrect about.

I have issues with the Bible. I can refer to Dan Barker’s (if you don’t know who he is, he is a former evangelical Christian missionary and pastor who converted to Atheism) argument. You cannot have a married Bachelor. The two terms are mutually exclusive. So…that being said: the bible is full of so many contradictions to itself that it’s not even funny. And it’s sad – because I used to believe that it was true, like I was taught to. But it can’t be. Two things cannot co-exist. You cannot be a god of peace and a god of war simultaneously. You cannot say murder is wrong, then command the mass slaughter of every man woman and child in an area. You cannot be against human sacrifice, then demand human sacrifice at the same time. They are mutually exclusive. And when two claims that state they are simultaneously true are mutually exclusive cancel each other out – they do not exist.

I’ve got a multitude of examples. Anyone want any? I’d love to discuss it. I’m by no means an atheist. At the moment, I would say I’m moderately agnostic.

Oh…and if you want to debate the Bible, be forewarned that I DID study the original languages – and I do know what I’m talking about. And I’m able to admit it if you stump me.

I hope you’re getting some answers or will get answers. It would be interesting to know (and I could ask a christian friend of mine) I consider myself Bhuddist, trying to find harmony with the earth and the spirits around me.

My husband used to be an evangelical, but left the church when it got political. I’ve asked him the same things about the Bible; he says that what he was taught is that the Old Testament SHOULD have been cancelled out by the New Testament, and churches that preach Old Testament law are misguided and outdated. Of course, a lot of the New Testament is outdated now, too, so my questions are never answered to my satisfaction.

BTW, I was raised Mormon. You want to REALLY get confused, throw a modern prophet and a whole new addition to the Bible into the mix! My brain couldn’t handle it and I left at 13.

I saw your note on Kimber’s diary saying that Jesus condoned beating slaves. Could you please give me those scriptures? I’ve read the new testament several times and if it’s there, I sure missed it! Thanks!

I’m not Christian. I’m agnostic. But the explanation I’ve seen is, basically, god condoned slavery at that time, because it was a standard practice.
