There is no one who loves pain itself, who seeks after it and wants to have it, simply because it is pain.
Quis autem vel eum iure reprehenderit qui in dolorem eum fugiat, quo voluptas nulla pariatur?
And who has any right to criticize one who avoids pain that will never lead to pleasure?

With truth and righteous indignation, we condemn those who are beguiled and seduced by the happiness they feel now, so blinded by love that they cannot foresee the anguish and distress that are destined to follow.
Excerpts from De finibus bonorum et malorum

Lots of times other people can foresee our anguish and distress. We usually prefer those people to keep their insights and foresights to themselves.
ryn: It’s been about power since the 1770s. Probably before. Who dreamt up that 60% clause of the Constitution letting whites have extra electoral votes and legislative seats proportional to their slave populations? Is it any wonder so many early presidents came from Virginia? I bet that wasn’t a popular clause in New England. It let the slave states protect their “right to property” for decades longer than popular opinion would have allowed.
What Open Diary needs is the ability to heart, or in some other way acknowledge, a note. 🙂
@dolorangelicus Thanks. Yes, sometimes you don’t even know when a note’s been replied to.
