Let it snow…
Currently we seem to be in a bit of a limbo land. For days and days the media has been feverishly expressing grave concerns about the impending doom of ‘The Beast from the East’ and ‘ Snowmaggedon’, with suitably alarming photographs of over turned gritters and people trudging through the snow to get a pint of milk. This morning the radio confirmed that the schools here would all be closed since there had been a bit of snow overnight. To be fair, it’s not a very usual affair to get snow here but there is always very little preparation done for it even given days of advance warning. I grew up in a place where it snowed fairly regularly in winter and so I am always a bit amused when what I know snow that would never have stopped anything there, makes everything grind to a halt here.
Anyway, the bit of snow we woke up to meant no school today. Cue lots of very happy children. However there were a lot of very sanctimonious grumpy adult persons on social media damning the powers that be – who frankly are damned if they do and damned it they don’t close the schools. They made the decision a bit late I suppose but, most people seemed very annoyed they were going to be stuck with their own kids. I understand that it’s hard if you have to make very late arrangements for your children when you work but I do get annoyed with people who treat school like it’s a baby sitting service no matter what the circumstance. Anyway… I am not going to witter on about that…snow day meant a nice extra day with my boy. We played cars, watched strange children’s programs on Netflix, baked a cake…and ate a lot of it.
After being hugely excited about the snow yesterday and being incredibly eager to get togged up to throw snowballs, today our boy was less impressed and offhandedly said he might go out later in the day. I did try and encourage him out but he was insistent he would go when he was ready, fair enough; but he was actually quite peeved when it came to late lunch time and a great deal of snow in our garden had melted away (bet the folks that closed the schools smacked their heads about it a bit)…it was bitterly cold in the wind and there was really not much snow to play with. It was odd really for it to be so cold but the sun still managed to melt the snow so much. Our boy was cheered up by the prospect we might get a bit more snow tomorrow and his Daddy is taking the day off too. So now we wait…to snow or not to snow…
I experienced living in snow when my daughter was in Spokane. USA. Too cold for me. She is now back home with me in sunny Australia. However the snow was very beautiful.
