In which my bad luck gets worse…and better
Copying from my local board for those of you who don’t follow me on Facebook:
So…we nearly got hit by a tornado today. Sooo scary! We left Farmer Johnson’s Country Kitchen where we ate for dinner and the sun was shining but we could see the dark clouds and we were all laughing and talking to Xander about the storm and wind and stuff like that. Get to Kroger because we need gas to get home, and the second we pull up to the gas pump, all hell breaks loose. The power goes out (so no gas) and the wind starts blowing so hard I can feel the truck trying to leave the ground. We look up and there are clouds circling around right above our heads. We make it into Kroger amid the flying trashcans, carts, and the cart protector cover nearly being blow away and apparently right after we got in the tornado touched down in the parking lot, then started to cave in part of the customer service ceiling. We had to hang out in Kroger for an hour before venturing home, and then EVERYTHING was black, so there was no gas to be had. I have NO idea how we made it home. My gas gauge has been broken for years and I typically run out of gas completely if I go 305 miles on a tank. We were at 298 leaving Kroger and it’s a good 20 miles home, plus we’ve been running the a/c all week so really I should’ve been able to get LESS than 300 miles out of that tank. Was pitch black all the way home (including patches of fog that were impossible to see if there was a tree in the road ahead of you), 360 going the opposite direction was completely closed due to an accident, and RIGHT as we get to the turn to our road, we start seeing lights. I have never been so happy to have power in my entire life!
Yeah. OMG. I admit to losing it a bit myself when I felt the truck come off the ground. Wes yelled at me and told me I had to keep it together for the kids, and I knew that, and I wasn’t REALLY going to break down, but I had a momentary lapse. And when we first got into Kroger there were a few times I had to fight back the tears. Xander was shaking so hard…he hates storms anyway so he was absolutely losing it. God was definitely watching over us that we got home ok. MIL has to bring me gas tomorrow because there’s no way my truck will make it the 2 miles I need to get to the station – assuming the stations are even open tomorrow. There are 3 all on the same corner with our Food Lion and…well, pretty much everything that there is out here, all 2 miles away and they were all dark when we passed tonight.
I will enjoy having power (and therefore a/c) tonight and pray to all that is holy that the bed bugs leave me the hell alone.
