I just remembered… being in 6th grade. We had to do a project that followed 40 years of history. Much emphasis was made on how the presented material looked. Lord, how I hated those stupid black and white photos we were supposed to xerox out of the history books and paste on the pages… so I didn’t. Instead I decorated each page with felt-markered astrixes, making sure to keep the order of the colors periodical. But then – the horror! I had to add a page in the middle. Do I copy everything again (handwritten, of course) just to jkeep with the color coordination? Or do I add a page decorated in a deeper color of blue between the light blue and the purple, hoping no one noticed that the weird blue appeared only once? And then all the teacher had to say was: “too bad you didn’t use photos”.

Wow, how I love computers, when I remember this…. love love love them! Remember white out? Hah! Hah! I love cut and paste. I love writing a paragraph, leaving it for another one, coming back to it. I love automatic numbering that I used to hate. Remeber doing that by hand? Changing all the numbers when you added a new one?

We probably are a messy and inaarticulate generation, but it’s sooooo much more comfortable. Without computers I would never have been able to keep a job.

In other news…. We got an apartment! Hah, i tought it would never happen. It’s such a cool apartment. too. Very pretty and spacious inside, with a yard and near the park. I should really post pictures. The down side? It’s not in Tel Aviv. It’s very very CLOSE to tel aviv, but not really inside the city.

Don’t laugh at me for thinking Tel Aviv is the center of the world and the middle of anything exciting. You would understand if you came here. You really would. At the moment, I just counted 20 or so activism events occuring around the town this week, more than 30 new art shows, dozens of plays, dozens of movies, about 20 musical events, more than 10 literary events and this is only what’s advertised in the local paper… and all for a population of 2-3 million people, and at a walking distance of an hour from the center of the city at most. Not to mention the beach. the cafes and restraunts, the park – it’s a small New York, really. If Nir agreed, i would live smack in the middle of it all or right near the sea. But he has issues with parking and with getting stuck in traffic in the morning. Very reasonable issues, it’s true… So now we are at a 10 minute driving distance from all of this wonderfulness, instead of in the middle of it. We can go to it, but not just soak it up, if you know what I mean. For that, we get easy parking, an easy commute, a much nicer house, a yard for Albert the rabbit, parties and barbecues and lighter taxes… And we feel a lot less cool. Living in Tel Aviv is cool. You don’t have to believe me, but it is…

At least now i don’t have to look for apartments every day, and I might actually see my friends again.

Denise just sent me a mail that she’s depressed about being alone on her birthday…. I could just pack and go to her, now that the apartment is rented.. but I already have plans for the weekend and I never asked for that vacation….

That’s so funny that you said Tel Aviv is like a small New York. A girl I tutor is from Israel, but her family now lives in New York (she moved to Cleveland when she got married). She was just saying today that she misses living in New York because it’s so much like Israel (although I’m not sure where she lived in Israel).

I miss living right near the city, only my city of choice was San Francisco… I love where I am now, of course, but it was nice having everything RIGHT THERE… I miss that.
